LISBON -- The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that killed a Madison Township man.
The patrol said John Bennett, 85, was walking across state Route 45 around 10:45 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a passing motorist.
The patrol said Jeremy Simpson, 30, of Lisbon, was driving north on Route 45 and attempting to pass another vehicle when he struck Bennett in the southbound lane.
Business burglary
VOLANT, Pa. -- Someone broke into one business and damaged doors at another.
Pennsylvania State Police said $790 was missing from The Soap Dish here, and doors at Marrett Carpet One on Potter Run Road were damaged sometime overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.
Suspicious gum
LISBON -- Kirk Sandoe of Charelton Street told Salem police at 10:08 p.m. Sunday that his child had received gum that looked suspicious while trick or treating in the Liberty Street and Jones Drive area earlier Sunday night.
Police told him to check the rest of the candy and throw out anything that looked suspicious.
Dryer fire damage
SALEM -- City firefighters said quick response prevented more damage from a dryer fire that caused $10,000 worth of damage to a four-unit apartment complex at 1220 Southeast Blvd. at 9:25 p.m. Sunday.
Firefighters said a female resident opened the dryer and found her blankets were on fire. Firefighters said the ventilation pipes were clogged, which caused heat to build up.
Residents in three other apartments in the building were evacuated. They were allowed to return to their apartments, but the woman had to find housing elsewhere.
Jail inmate surrenders
LISBON -- A man who walked away from the Columbiana County minimum security jail late Friday surrendered to authorities Sunday while deputies searched woods near his home, the sheriff's office said.
Michael J. Mick, 27, of Frischkorn Heights, Wellsville, was serving a sentence for carrying a concealed weapon and a probation violation. Deputies said he stole a pickup truck near state Routes 30 and 170 after he walked away.
Deputies said inmates in the minimum security wing can come and go to appointments, and that Mick did not break out of the facility.
FEMA flood assistance
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has assisted 247 Lawrence County families so far as a result of September's storms.
According to FEMA, $266,520 in housing assistance grants was disbursed. An additional $117,845 was given to county residents through other programs.

World Community Day
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Greenville Area Council of Church Women will have a World Community Day program at Hillside Presbyterian Church, 2 N. High St., from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday.
The program features a presentation on a recent mission trip to Guatemala by Cindy Tonks. Refreshments will be served and the council will accept donations of paper products and personal-care items.
