Youngstown's Kelly Pavlik told he'll fight at Struthers Fieldhouse in July

The opponent is still to be determined after talks with Dallas Vargas fell through.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Top Rank Inc. has announced that local boxer Kelly Pavlik, an unbeaten middleweight (20-0), will be on a pro card at the Struthers Fieldhouse in July.
A bottom-line notification came from Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler, who will be in Youngstown for a mid-June press conference pertaining to this fight show that will be televised by the Telefutura Network.
Pavlik has fought twice this year, with a six-round decision in Kansas City on Jan. 23 and a knockout win in Phoenix on March 26.
Pavlik, nicknamed "The Ghost," was taken out of cards at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas on May 8 and Atlantic City on May 22. Both were undercards on top featured HBO televised shows.
Jack Loew, who has been Pavlik's trainer since the boxer was 10, said, "Top Rank had him tabled on two shows for this area that were canceled, and they finally agreed on a July date at Struthers.
"I am glad to have Kelly fighting at home with his great fan base able to see him in person," Loew said. "When and if Kelly wins a title, I feel they will have him fighting here a lot more."
An opponent that was mentioned is Dallas Vargas (16-1, 12 KOs) from Toledo, who, like Pavlik, fights between middleweight and super middleweight. But Vargas will not be the opponent.
No deal
Pat Nelson, who manages Vargas, said, "Unfortunately, negotiations for the Kelly Pavlik and Dallas Vargas fight broke down when Top Rank Inc. refused to make the fight the main event."
Nelson maintains that Vargas already won a scheduled 10-round co-feature on Telefutura "and this certainly qualified him for main event money."
Mike Pavlik, Kelly's father and co-manager, said, "There was a fair offer made to Dallas Vargas, and it was turned down.
"Sometimes greed is the reason that bigger and better fight shows are not put into areas such as ours," Pavlik said.
Kelly Pavlik has been told that a top-10 fighter will be brought to the fight.
"I am waiting for anyone they throw in front of me," Pavlik said. "I am extremely happy to be home fighting again, and hopefully we will have a big turnout."
