2 jailed after car chase
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two Wampum men are in Lawrence County Jail after a stolen-car chase through six Lawrence County communities early Saturday, in which city Patrolman James Hogans was slightly injured and the cruiser he drove was heavily damaged in a collision with the stolen car.
Jailed are Kenneth James King Jr., 35, of Short Street, who state police said drove the stolen car the wrong way on state Route 60 for about five miles, and his passenger, Louie Gene Million, 32, of Main Street, police said. The 55-minute chase went almost completely across Lawrence County from south to north.
When a 1986 Pontiac 6000 was stolen from Beaver Street in Wampum at 1 a.m., the victim observed the theft and called 911. Wampum officer Robert Sipe, who heard a broadcast description of the car, spotted it and pursued it, police said.
The high-speed pursuit continued north on state Route 18 into North Beaver Township and into the city, where city police joined it, then continued through Union and Neshannock townships into Pulaski Township. After entering state Route 60, the Pontiac rammed the marked police car at U.S. Route 422, then continued northbound in the southbound lanes for about five miles, including a single-lane construction zone, before pulling onto the berm, where the occupants fled on foot, police said.
After foot pursuits, Trooper Victor Stonebraker apprehended King, and Neshannock Officer Alfred DeCarbo apprehended Million, police said.
