Taxicab driver robbed
WARREN -- A 56-year-old male taxicab driver was robbed of $48 after receiving a call to pick up a fare in the 300 block of Austin Avenue on Friday evening, police said.
When the driver stopped at Union Street and Austin Avenue, two men approached the cab at 11:30 p.m. One of them sat behind the driver, grabbed him by the neck, brandished a knife and demanded money.
The New Valley Taxi driver handed over the money, and the two men fled on foot, police said.
No suspects are in custody and there were no injuries.
Man shot in thigh
YOUNGSTOWN -- An East Side man was in guarded condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center on Saturday evening after having been shot in the left thigh by a man who tried to rob him of his motorcycle late Saturday afternoon.
Jose Salinas, 29, of South Bruce Street, told police he was on his motorcycle stopped for a traffic light at Oak Street and Garland Avenue at 5:40 p.m. when a hooded man in a dark-colored car that pulled alongside him demanded his bike while pointing a handgun at his thigh. Salinas refused to turn over his motorcycle, engaged his clutch to flee and heard gunfire, but didn't realize he'd been shot until he got home. He said he felt a burning sensation, took off his pants and saw blood coming from two holes in his thigh.
Police saw the wounds and surmised they came from a small-caliber weapon, a .22- or .38-caliber gun.
Grant workshops
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two free grant-seeking workshops for representatives of nonprofit organizations are scheduled next month in the meeting room of the main public library, 305 Wick Ave.
A program on grant-seeking basics will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and a program on searching the Foundation Center's database on CD-ROM will be at 9:30 a.m. June 15.

Buckeye Girls State set
More than 900 teenage girls from Ohio will participate in a weeklong program to educate them in political processes.
The 58th annual Buckeye Girls State will be June 13-19 on the campus of Ashland University.
The program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, will feature workshops in government, caucuses, rallies, campaigning and elections.
There will be 42 girls from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties participating as delegates in the event.

Participants for parade
CAMPBELL -- The committee organizing the 2004 Summer in the City Parade is seeking participants.
The parade will start at city hall at 12:30 p.m. July 3. Participants will march about 1.5 miles to Roosevelt Park.

Italian festival pageant
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest will present the 2004 Miss Italian Youngstown Beauty and Talent Pageant during this year's festival July 16-18 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
The pageant committee is accepting applications for this year's event. The pageant will be at 4 p.m. July 17. The winner will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, while first and second runners-up will each receive $100 savings bonds.
