State police seek identity of caller who said gunman was stalking her

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) -- State police were trying to find a woman who left a message on an answering machine Wednesday night saying she had been shot and was in fear for her life.
Authorities said Friday that the woman left the message on the answering machine of a resident of Slippery Rock borough at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The caller said she had been shot and that her assailant was in the yard; gunshots were heard at the end of the 90-second call.
"I'm out in the yard. He has a gun. He's coming back. ... I don't want him to come back. He already shot me once, he could do it again," the woman said, according to a state police transcript of the call.
Police said they don't know who made the call because the resident who received it doesn't have caller ID and didn't immediately try to trace the call. State police have asked the phone company for help.
"We don't know if this was a prank or if someone called the wrong number," said Trooper Jonathan Bayer, a police spokesman.
He said after authorities listened to the tape, they felt it was alarming enough that an investigation was warranted.
Police said anyone with information should call the Butler state police barracks at (724) 284-8100.
