PREP TENNIS Area's survivors split matches



COLUMBUS -- Boardman High freshman Bryant Salcedo and the Canfield High doubles team of Kevin Kuppler and Matt Waigand both split two matches during the first day of the state tennis tournament Friday at Ohio State University.
The three area athletes were competing in Division I.
Salcedo's first-round singles victory was over Jim Brannon, a senior from Cincinnati Oak Hills, 6-3, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, Salcedo was beaten by Lexington senior Ty Schaub, 6-2, 7-5.
Schaub advanced by downing Brendan Baumann of Columbus Whetstone, 6-0, 6-0.
In first-round doubles, Kuppler-Waigand defeated Chillicothe's Brad Seymour and Craig Lods, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Seymour is a junior and Lods a sophomore.
In quarterfinals, Kuppler-Waigand, both seniors, lost to Mike O'Connell-James O'Connell of Toledo St. Francis, 6-0, 6-0.
In their first match on Friday, Mike O'Connell, a junior, and James O'Connell, a senior, defeated Randy Lofgren and Felipe Rossetti of Cincinnati Princeton, 6-1, 6-0.
