Police identify body pulled from river

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- A body pulled from the Hocking River was that of a man who jumped into the water earlier this week after a disturbance outside a tavern, the Athens County sheriff's department said.
Joe F. Spaulding, 24, of Logan may have jumped into the rain-swollen river when officers arrived Sunday at the tavern in Logan because he feared arrest after throwing a rock at a car outside the bar, police said.
A passer-by called police to report seeing the body in the river about 11 miles from the bar in Nelsonville, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities pulled out the body Friday near a bike path outside the town, about 55 miles southeast of Columbus.
Storms last weekend made the rapids rough, police said. A friend who jumped in with Spaulding turned back to the bank when he realized he could not make it across the river.
Athens County Coroner Scott Jenkinson said identification on the body and tattoos and other features matched Spaulding.
An autopsy will be done.
