PETE MOLLICA | Golf Good sets high school clinic at Candywood

Candywood Golf Club head professional Barry Good has come up with a new idea, which will be beneficial to area junior golfers who have expectations of playing for their high school golf teams.
Beginning on June 16 and running each week through Aug. 4, Good and his assistant professional, David Lapmarado, will conduct a high school clinic at the Candywood layout.
The clinic will be held once a week from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and is for anyone having a strong desire to compete in high school golf and properly learn the game.
Good, who has been at Candywood for many years, has watched a lot of young players come up through the ranks of high school golf.
"So many young golfers just don't have any idea of what they're getting into as they try out for their high school teams," Good said.
"A lot of them become frustrated when they don't excel quickly and many of them quit and don't return to the game," he added.
"In our clinic the players will learn about the game, their game, and what to expect when they become eligible to play high school golf," he said.
Good said that the ideal age participants for this clinic are youths 12 to 14 years of age, who are still a year or two away from high school.
Preparation
"By going through our clinic they will learn the game as they need to know it, they will eventually play more golf and become better players," he said.
"In this clinic, the players are going to learn every club in their bag from the driver to the putter," Good said.
The first lesson on June 16 will cover what Good calls the pre-shot fundamentals -- the grip, stance, alignment and setup.
The other lessons include hitting tee shots with the driver, hitting rough and fairway shots, hitting iron shots, chipping and pitching and putting.
Good and Lapmarado will then do a review of the first six lessons on July 28, and that will be followed by a playing lesson with the pros on the final session on Aug. 4.
"That final lesson will give the players an idea of their progress and will help those wanting to go on to the next level," Good said.
Welcomes players
Good also welcomes any current high school players who are interested in improving their game for the coming season as well.
"All sections of golf are important, but none is more important than the junior section," Good added. "This is the group that comprises the future of this great game."
The cost for the eight week program is $80 per student. For more information, Good and Lapmarado can be contacted at the course at (330) 399-4217 or at (330) 539-5285.
Good will also hold a junior golf tournament slated for July 8 at Candywood.
This event is open to all boys and girls ages 10 through 18, and will be held in three age divisions (10-12, 13-15 and 16-18) for boys and girls.
The youngest group will play nine holes, while the two older groups will play 18 holes. Entry fee is $16 for the 10-12 group and $22 for the other two. Contact Good at the course for more information.
