McConnell's Mill
Programs about bread making, plants and nature, as well as a pair of tours, will be presented this weekend at McConnell's Mill State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
& quot;Stone Ground Grain Day & quot;: Various breads and cookies made from stone-ground flour will be featured during this three-hour program, which starts at noon today at the Old Mill. The flour was once ground at the mill and is available locally.
& quot;Fabulous Ferns & quot;: A naturalist will conduct this event, part of Pennsylvania Hike Week, beginning at 3:30 p.m. today at the Kildoo Trailhead adjacent to the Covered Bridge. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the artistry of several types of leaves and learn about the life cycle of ferns found along the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge.
& quot;Search for Spring & quot;: This family-oriented outing will allow people to search for various signs of spring and see points of interest along the Alpha Pass Trail. Prizes will be awarded. A naturalist will conduct this program, which is from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday in the Point Picnic Area parking lot.
The park also offers two, half-hour corn-grinding demonstration tours beginning at 1 and 3 p.m. and two, 45-minute Grist Mill tours that start at 2 and 4 p.m. Both tours are Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Memorial Day, at the Old Mill.
