ASHLAND
Amber Miller (Cardinal Mooney), a freshman on the women's track and field team, ran on the 4x100 relay team that placed second at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association outdoor meet. Miller also placed third in the 100 hurdles in 14.70 seconds.
BALDWIN-WALLACE
Stacy Havaich (Austintown Fitch), a senior on the women's track and field team, turned in her best time of the season in the 1,500 meters at the Ohio Athletic Conference championships. Havaich clocked 4:45.47 to place second. In a previous meet at Westminster, Havaich won the 1,600 meters in 4:49.04, while teammate Tatum Gruskiewicz, a senior, won the 10,000-meter run in 47:11.
HIRAM
Joe Marzano (Cardinal Mooney), a senior outfielder on the baseball team, was selected for the second straight year to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference first team. Marzano batted .322 with six home runs and 28 RBIs. Jeremy Krol (LaBrae), a junior pitcher, was picked to the second team. Krol posted a 5-2 record and 2.98 ERA. Derek Stanton, a junior infielder, was named honorable mention. Stanton batted .342 with three homers and 24 RBIs.
KENT STATE
Tracie Logar (McDonald), a senior pitcher on the softball team, was selected to the All-Mid-American Conference academic team for the second straight year. Logar, who posted an 8-4 record with a MAC-best 1.37 earned run average this season, achieved a 3.84 grade-point average as a major in business management. She will attend the University of Toledo Law School. Logar, who batted .233 with 16 RBIs, was named to the All-MAC second team. She also set a precedent by being named MAC East player and pitcher of the week, the first player to do so since the league split into divisional play in 1998.
South Range High senior Greg Rohan will play baseball at Kent State. A two-time Inter-County League first-team infielder, Rohan batted .478 this season (33-of-69), with six home runs and 36 RBIs. He also had nine doubles, a triple and walked 19 times. Rohan, who had a .905 fielding percentage, competed in the Coca-Cola All-Star Classic last weekend at Cene Park and has been chosen to play in the Mizuno All-Ohio Series event. Kent State plans to play Rohan at third base.
MARIETTA
Taryn Dobson (Springfield) completed her junior season on the softball team. Dobson, the daughter of Lana and Terry Dobson, played in 23 games, batted .233 and recorded 45 putouts while playing second and third base. Marietta posted an 18-19 record, including 8-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
MOUNT UNION
Ashley Kohler (Boardman), a sophomore on the women's track and field team, placed second in the discus at the Ohio Athletic Conference meet. She threw a personal-best of 140 feet, 7 inches, and qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet. Kohler is the daughter of Marianne Kohler and the late Joseph Kohler, and is majoring in business with a 2.85 grade-point average.
Senior Ryan Hochstetler (Orrville) and freshman Justin Rodhe (Kenston) are taking part in the Division III outdoor track and field championships this weekend in Decatur, Ill. Hochstetler qualified in the 5,000 meters by having the ninth-best time in the nation (14:30.7) while Rodhe ranked 14th (163-3) in the discus. Senior All-American Joe Eby (Walsh Jesuit), who ranked fourth in the 1,500 (3:50.55), was not able to compete due to an injury.
MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE
Jason Irish (Lakeview), a senior outfielder-pitcher on the baseball team, was one of eight players selected to the National Christian College Athletic Association All-American team. Irish had a .392 batting average and led MVNU in doubles (15) and shared the team lead in home runs (7) and RBIs (47). He also scored 42 runs. As a pitcher, Irish has a 7-3 record with a 3.33 ERA. MVNU placed fifth out of 10 teams at the NCCAA National Tournament and has a 39-17 record. The Cougars are in the NAIA World Series this week in Lewiston, Idaho. Freshman Kyle Irish (0-0), Jason's brother, pitched two innings in two appearances.
WALSH
Kristen Piersante (Canfield) and Alan Dattilio (West Branch), contributed to Walsh University's 3.16 overall grade-point average for the spring semester. Piersante, a sophomore on the women's cross country and track teams, achieved a 3.96 GPA. Dattilio, a freshman on the men's golf team, compiled a 3.26 GPA. The Walsh women had a 3.34 GPA while the men posted 2.92.
MALONE
Scotty Jones (East Palestine), a freshman on the golf team, fired 75-73-77-83--308 to place 40th in the NAIA National Championships held at Prairie Highlands Golf Course in Olathe, Kan. Jones helped Malone to a tie for 14th place in a 28-team field with 1,236 . Oklahoma City University won with 1,170. Coach Ken Hyland, who completed his 32nd year at the helm, directed the Pioneers into the national meet for the 20th time.
THIEL
Junior Libby Hauser (Reynolds) competed in the javelin at the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Decatur, Ill. Her best throw this season has been 141 feet, 4 inches. She placed 14th at the 2002 national championships.
Artina Trader was named women's basketball coach. A native of Annapolis, Md., Trader is a 1999 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College. She began her coaching career at Allegheny in 1999 as an assistant coach before going to John Carroll University from 2002-03. She was junior varsity coach and recruiting coordinator.
WEST LIBERTY STATE
Jeff Peterson, a senior running back and safety for the Lowellville High football team last season, will attend West Liberty on a partial football scholarship. Peterson made the All-Ohio Division VI second team last season, as well as the All-Northeast Ohio first team; and was picked to the All-Inter-County League first team for the second year in a row. Peterson is the son of Christina and Keith Peterson, and he has a brother, Andy, who is a sophomore linebacker on the Bowling Green football team.
WOOSTER
Brianne Diorio (Cardinal Mooney), a senior shortstop on the softball team this season, concluded her career with 11 school records. Diorio set career records for games played (139), at-bats (417), hits (126), doubles (27), RBI's (57), and total bases (158), and tied the record for runs scored (55). She also set season records for hits (43), doubles (12), RBIs (25), runs scored (21), and total bases (57), all established in 2003 when she also batted .367. This season, Diorio batted a team-best .292 and was named to the North Coast Athletic Conference team for the third time, making her the fifth softball player in Wooster history to do so. She also was named Wooster's offensive player of the year for the third time. In 2002, Diorio was picked to the NCAC all-tournament team. Diorio recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in communication studies. She and served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee during the 2003-04 academic year. While at Cardinal Mooney, Diorio batted .380 for her career, won four letters and was selected to the Steel Valley Conference team four times.
