New pastor named
BOARDMAN -- The Rev. Thomas Constantine has been appointed the new permanent pastor of St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., by Metropolitan Maximos of the Pittsburgh Metropolis. Father Constantine has been the interim priest at St. John's for 11 months. He's its 29th pastor since the parish was founded in 1915.
A native of Baltimore, Md., Father Constantine received his bachelor's degree from Towson State University in 1978. He taught elementary school before enrolling in the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary, having graduated in 1982. After attending the University of Athens in Greece for a year, he was ordained a deacon in 1985 and a priest in 1986.
Nun's 25th anniversary
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Sister Shirley Huff celebrated her Silver Jubilee as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale on May 15 at the Motherhouse in Pittsburgh.
Sister Shirley is the administrative assistant of Jameson Vista South, a Housing and Urban Development senior living complex that has 100 units. She's been with the facility since 1992. Her responsibilities include completing rent re-certification and planning activities for the residents.
Sister Shirley was born and reared in New Castle and is the oldest of seven children.
10th anniversary services
WARREN -- The Greater Apostolic Faith Church, 3571 Tod Ave. N.W., will have 10th anniversary services honoring its pastor and wife, Phillip W. and Deborah C. Shealey at 7:30 p.m. Monday through June 6. A banquet will be at 4 p.m. June 6 in DiVieste's Banquet Hall. Tickets are $25 per adult and $12 per child age 5-12. Call (330) 394-0922.
Annual prayer breakfast
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Association of Churches will have its 19th annual prayer breakfast Nov. 23. The association is reverting to its customary date, the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week since this year that day is not part of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. In recent years, the date was changed so it did not fall on Ramadan.
The association also plans to restore the title, "Mayor's Prayer Breakfast" to designate the event as one where public officials may pray for our community. All elected officials, business leaders and congregations are invited to participate. Details will be announced later.
The association's board of directors also designated September as MVAC Month. Speakers will discuss the MVAC's mission in local congregations.
Veterans honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., will honor its veterans at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Members of all branches of the military will be represented. The Austintown American Legion will present the colors and taps will be played. The congregation will also remember its members who have passed away.
Outdoor service
ANDOVER -- First United Methodist Church, 181 S. Main St., is again sponsoring the drive-in service for campers at 9:30 a.m. starting Sunday through Sept. 1.
The site provided by Wildwood Acres Campgrounds is at the intersection of state Route 7 and Marvin Road, south of the village square. This is the service's 31st year. Chairs will be provided. People can take part in the service in their vehicle or bring their own chairs. Special music will include Dan Schall on June 13 and God's Quad on Aug. 1.
New informal service
BRISTOLVILLE -- Bristolville United Methodist Church, 6251 N. Park Ave., will have start an informal service at 8:30 a.m. June 6 called CAYA Worship, or "come as you are." The service will be at the township park's pavilion, weather permitting. Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m. and the regular service is at 11 a.m. Sunday. Call (330) 889-3181.
