Pastor tells police of loss in eBay purchase
CANFIELD -- The pastor of a local church has reported to police that he may have been conned by a seller on the eBay Internet auction site.
The Rev. Terrence J. Hazel, pastor of St. Michael Church on Glenview Drive, told police Thursday that he had used the site to buy a $100 pair of Shawn Kemp Reebok Kamikaze shoes and to pay a $15 shipping fee March 27, police reports show.
He said he has not received the shoes and has made failed attempts to contact the seller.
Housing citation
YOUNGSTOWN -- A housing department inspector, after years of noncompliance from Tamme Yeager, who was repeatedly told to clean up her property at 2720 Idlewood Ave., asked Thursday that a police officer issue two summons.
Police issued a citation to Yeager, 35, for failure to scrap and paint her home and failure to remove trash and debris from the yard.
The officer took photos of the house, which he said has no gutters and has shingles that should have been replaced.
Fallen officers honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- An outdoor tribute sign dedicated to members of the Youngstown Police Department who died in the line of duty was unveiled Friday in the Sparkle Market parking lot on Mahoning Avenue.
The sign is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice the officers made to maintain the peace and safety of the city, said Capt. Kenneth Centorame, president of the Youngstown Police Ranking Officers.
YPRO and the Youngstown Police Association joined Tom Cregan, president of Genesis Outdoor Sign Company, in unveiling the sign.
The sign is expected to remain in the parking lot for three weeks, Centorame said.
Pretrial hearing reset
STRUTHERS -- A pretrial hearing for Donald J. Auman, 18, of Poland Avenue was reset for Sept. 24.
Auman, who is charged with 10 counts of criminal damaging in a BB gun shooting spree in February that resulted in damage to several parked cars, was originally slated to appear in municipal court Friday.
Fire officer stays on
COITSVILLE -- Township trustees recently accepted a letter from the assistant fire chief rescinding a resignation letter he had sent to the board in March.
Chris Manack had resigned as assistant chief March 20 but retained his position as a firefighter. Trustees did not accept that letter, said Christeen Partika, township clerk.
After trustees discussed the situation with Manack, he submitted a second letter, rescinding his resignation.
Trustees officially accepted that letter during a special meeting Tuesday. Manack had resumed his duties as assistant fire chief May 1.
Office closed Fridays
LEETONIA -- Beginning next week, the village water office will be closed Fridays until further notice.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said office hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday as usual for customers to pay water bills or contact the water office clerk with other business.
Staffing the water office four days per week is a cost-saving measure to help keep the water department within budget, Phillips said.
Customers can still mail water bill payments to village hall at 300 E. Main St. or drop them off at the village hall, where there is a payment slot in the front door of the water clerk's office.
Smaller motorcycle tags
COLUMBUS -- Beginning in June, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will issue new, smaller 30-day temporary tags for motorcycles.
Until now, the same temporary tags have been issued for passenger vehicles and motorcycles.
The new tags are 4 inches high and 7 inches wide, matching the size of the motorcycle license plates, which were made smaller March 1, 2004.
The tags will have similar features as the full-size temporary tags but will not include the punch-outs for the month and day of expiration. Dealers will start issuing the new tags Tuesday, with the cost remaining at $10.50.
