Angels break out of slump by dropping White Sox 5-1

The Yankees took over first place in the East after defeating Tampa Bay.

CHICAGO -- Aaron Sele allowed four hits in 6 1-3 innings to remain unbeaten, and the Anaheim Angels stopped a four-game losing streak by beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1 Saturday.
Jeff DaVanon had two doubles and a single for the Angels, who scored five in the fourth inning off Jon Rauch (0-1).
Making his sixth start since beginning the season in the bullpen, Sele (4-0) gave up three singles and Paul Konerko's 10th homer in the seventh. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth when Carlos Lee was caught off second and tagged out in a rundown to end the threat.
The 6-foot-11 Rauch was making his first major league start since Sept. 27, 2002. And like the other three No. 5 starters for Chicago this season, he struggled, giving up five runs and 10 hits in just 3 2-3 innings.
Chicago's fifth starters are a combined 0-7 this season.
Just called up from Triple-A Charlotte, Rauch yielded six hits in a five-run fourth inning.
Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Guillen opened with singles before DaVanon hit an RBI double. Bengie Molina added a sacrifice fly, Casey Kotchman an RBI single and Adam Kennedy a run-scoring grounder to first to make it 4-0. David Eckstein's run-scoring single finished Rauch.

TORONTO -- Miguel Batista struck out a season-high seven in eight innings to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to their fifth straight victory.
Toronto's Carlos Delgado left after the fifth inning with an irritated right ribcage. He grimaced after swinging the bat on a groundout.
The Rangers have lost a season-high four straight and have scored in just three of their last 36 innings.
Batista (3-4) allowed two runs, five hits and three walks, taking a shutout into the seventh before allowing Laynce Nix's RBI grounder and a run-scoring wild pitch, which pulled Texas to 3-2. Batista was coming off a 7-2 loss to Boston on May 23 in which he gave up five runs in three innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dennys Reyes won his first decision in 27 appearances and Carlos Beltran hit a tiebreaking, three-run double that led the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins.
Reyes (1-0) had not won since beating Seattle in relief for Texas on Sept. 9, 2002. He had gone six starts without a win since defeating Tampa Bay on Sept. 6. 2002.
He struck out five of his first six batters Saturday and finished with eight in seven innings. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- and six hits, walking four.
Jeremy Affeldt pitched the ninth for his third save in four chances.
After Matt Stairs tied it 2-all with a solo homer in the seventh, Johan Santana (2-3) gave up a single to Tony Graffanino and a walk to Byron Gettis in the bottom half.

Yankees 5, Devil Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Kevin Brown allowed three hits in 7 2-3 innings and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to take over first place in the AL East.
Bernie Williams, Ruben Sierra and Enrique Wilson homered for the defending AL champions, who climbed to a season-high 12 games over .500 (30-18) with their sixth straight win on a 12-game road trip that ends Sunday.
Pitching on a week's rest because he left the Yankees for two days to handle a personal matter, Brown (6-1) limited the Devil Rays to Toby Hall's leadoff single in the third until Hall led off the eighth with his third home run of the season.
Carl Crawford walked, stole second and scored on Rocco Baldelli's two-out double, chasing the Yankees starter. After reliever Felix Heredia gave up an RBI double to Aubrey Huff, leaving New York with a 5-3 lead, Tom Gordon struck out Fred McGriff to end the inning.
