High water forces waterfront areas to limit recreational activity options

Boaters and campers will be restricted, Army Corps says.
BERLIN CENTER -- Those planning to use waterfront facilities at Berlin Lake or Shenango River Lake over the Memorial Day weekend will find their options limited because of high water from recent heavy rains, the Army Corps of Engineers has announced.
The Mill Creek campground and boat launch at Berlin Lake are closed and will likely remain closed until June 4, the corps said.
The water is too high to launch boats at Dutch Harbor Marina, and the ability to use the Bonner Road and Les' Bait Shop launching ramps depends on the type of boat and trailer, the corps reported.
The Mill Creek day-use area remains open for picknicking, however. For a 24-hour recorded message concerning conditions at Berlin Lake, call (330) 547-5445.
Closed campsites
At Shenango River Lake, which is in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Shenango Recreation Area campsites 226-330, known as the New Duck Lake Loop, are closed through the holiday weekend. The remaining campsites, 1-225, will stay open if there is no more heavy rain, the corps said.
The Clark Boat Lauch and Golden Run Wildlife Area will stay closed all weekend, but the Mahaney and Shenango Recreation Area boat launches remain open, the corps said.
As of Thursday evening, the water in the lake was 5 1/2 feet above its normal summer level, the corps said. For a 24-hour condition report, call (724) 962-4384.
The corps also announced facilities' closings or offered high-water advisories for: Crooked Creek, Mahoning Creek, Tionesta and Woodcock Creek lakes, all in Pennsylvania.
