Blood donors get chance to win gas for a year
Supplies typically run low during the summer, Red Cross officials say.
To help prevent an anticipated blood shortage, the American Red Cross is offering donors a chance to win a prepaid gasoline card when they come to donate.
Based on calculated average use, the card could be considered as access to free gas for a year.
From now through Aug. 31, people donating at Red Cross donor centers, bloodmobiles and drives sponsored at community locations will be eligible for a ticket to win the gas card.
Because a person can donate blood every 56 days, donors at the beginning of the campaign will have time to donate again, getting another ticket entry before the campaign ends, says a Red Cross news release.
Typical shortage
Blood supplies typically run short during the summer season because donors are often busy with increased highway travel and other outdoor activities.
Paul Nelson, the ARC's regional manager of donor recruitment and creator of the sweepstakes, said, "Every driver knows that uneasy feeling when the car's gas tank is getting close to empty. That is the same way we feel when our blood inventory is critically low.
"This summer, by coming to donate blood, you get a chance to win free gas for a year and help us keep our shelves stocked with blood supplies."
