RAVENNA -- Hubbard High senior Shaun Lane leaped 21 feet, 111/4 inches, to place first in the long jump, and Newton Falls' Anthony Barnes took second at 21-10, Wednesday in the first day of the Division II regional track and field meet at Ravenna High School.
Salem's Aubree Horning finished third in the girls shot put with a toss of 39-6.
Those three athletes earned berths for the state meet June 4-5 at Ohio State.
Finals were also held in the boys pole vault, discus and 4x800-meter relay, but no area athletes qualified. The top four in each event qualified for state.
Poland's Colleen Moran, Kim Brogan, Casey Turic and Lauren Fithian just missed in the 4x800 relay, as they finished fifth in 9 minutes, 44.9 seconds. Chagrin Falls (9:42.54) was fourth.
Preliminaries and semifinals in sprints, hurdles and relays were held, while the rest of the field and running events will be Friday starting at 5 p.m.
Lane's best of year
It was Lane's best effort of the season. He said he wasn't able to reach 20 feet until the Trumbull County meet.
"I am just starting to peak at the right time," said Lane, who will make his first state meet appearance. "My goal at state will be to win, but I'll be pleased if I place."
Barnes, who lost for the first time this season, placed sixth at state last year (21-9 1/4). He's struggling with a groin pull.
"It hurts and it's affecting my running speed," he said. "I'll use ice and whirlpool and stay off of it. I'll try to practice some in preparing for the state meet.
"I want to win at Columbus," said Barnes. "I have jumped 22-101/4 this season, and I think that may be the best in the state in Div. II."
Horning meets goal
Horning, who fouled on all three of her preliminary throws at last year's state meet, said she met her goal for the season.
"I wanted this for a long time and I worked out in the weight room all year at 5:30 in the morning to get to state," she said. "I was a little nervous coming here today, but I made 34 [feet] on my first throw in the prelims and now I have a week to prepare for state."
Painesville Harvey, with four events completed, led the boys division with 26 points. Orange was second with 14.
Medina Buckeye led the girls standings with 18 points and Bay Village Bay was second with 13 points, after three events.
