Council wants letters of interest in treasurer's post

Council unveiled plaques honoring two councilmen who recently died in office.
SHARON, Pa. -- City council will be accepting letters of interest in the vacant post of city treasurer Richard Fragle, who died May 18.
Council President Fred Hoffman announced at Wednesday's council meeting that people interested in the job should file a letter, along with a r & eacute;sum & eacute;, with the city clerk by 5 p.m. June 10.
Council will then arrange interviews and make an appointment at a special council meeting to be scheduled in June, he said. The appointment will run until January 2006.
To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of the city for at least one year.
Honored late councilmen
Council also unveiled two plaques honoring Councilmen Lou Rotunno and George Gulla, who both died in office.
Rotunno died Nov. 18, 2003, shortly after winning re-election to council. Gulla died Jan. 17.
The plaques bear their pictures and list the dates of their council terms.
Hoffman said they will hang in city council chambers.
Members of the families of both men were invited to city hall for the unveiling of the plaques.
Sitting council members, two of whom were appointed to fill the vacancies left by the deaths, spoke of the dedication to the city and its residents exhibited by both Rotunno and Gulla and of the friendships they had developed with the two men.
Rotunno's service to the Shenango Valley Community Library, including his lead in raising $350,000 for the library endowment fund, also was cited by Councilman Victor Heutsche.
Gulla was described by Councilman Bob Lucas as "a 100 percent type of guy, no matter what he did."
