Boardman native gets arts grant

The Ohio Arts Council has awarded Boardman native Michael Dempsey an Individual Artist Fellowship Award of $10,000 for play-writing.
The council, a state agency, provides funding and support to arts endeavors that enhance cultural, educational and economic aspects of communities.
Dempsey submitted a copy of an earlier play, "Hail to the Chef," with his application. Arts council panelists lauded him for his comedic writing skills, character development and plot twists, among other things.
Meanwhile, deadlines are nearing for others to apply for Ohio Arts Council funding.
Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants are for those who want to teach or learn master crafts, music, dance, storytelling or other forms of art. Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded to people in pairs -- that is, a master artist and an apprentice. Application deadline is July 1.
The council also will award up to three $1,500 Ohio Heritage Fellowships to folk artists who have had a significant impact on Ohioans. Awards will be given in up to three categories: performing arts, material culture (including folk art, folk crafts and folk architecture), and community leadership. Self-nomination is not permitted. Nominees must be Ohio residents. Deadline is Aug. 1.
