CLARK, Pa. -- Recent storms and high water have forced the closure of several Shenango River Lake recreation areas and campground facilities.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have closed campsites 226-230 (known as the New Duck Lake loop) at the Shenango Recreation Area, and they will remain closed through Memorial Day.
The Clark Boat Launch and Golden Run Wildlife area have also been closed and will remain closed through Memorial Day as well.
Crash kills elderly man
BEAVER, Pa. -- An 83-year-old New Castle man died in a one-car crash on Pa. Route 60.
Pennsylvania State Police said William A. Boughner was traveling south in Hopewell Township when his 1995 Mercury Marquis left the road and hit a guardrail at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday. The car became airborne and rolled several times. Police said Boughner was wearing a seat belt.
Plane crashes in field
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- No one was injured when a small plane crashed in a field off Pa. Route 18 on Warner Road in North Beaver Township.
Paul Henry, North Beaver Township fire chief, said the small aircraft landed sometime in the late morning Tuesday after experiencing problems.
The pilot repaired the plane and tried to take off again but did not have enough space, Henry said. The craft flipped onto its nose as the pilot tried to stop, around 4 p.m., the fire chief said. Henry said the man walked away from the plane unhurt. Henry had no details about the pilot or his flight plans.
The Federal Aviation Administration was on the scene but could not be reached for details this morning.
Land for natatorium
COLUMBUS -- State-owned land would be transferred to the city of East Liverpool for a natatorium, under provisions in a bill that passed the Ohio House on Tuesday.
The land in question, owned by Kent State University, would be transferred to the YMCA and the city so the Y can construct a natatorium, under the provision.
Further details on the natatorium weren't immediately available.
According to state officials, the Y requested the title to the gymnasium and part of the parking lot on the Kent State campus in exchange for another property next to the campus.
KSU's trustee board has approved the deal, state officials said. The measure already been passed by the Senate, so it goes to Gov. Bob Taft for his anticipated signature.
New lodge to open
GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE -- A new, $16.9 million lodge and conference center at Geneva State Park will open to the public Thursday with tours, wine and food tasting and entertainment and a fireworks display in the evening.
The day will officially begin with a "vine cutting" by Gov. Bob Taft at 1 p.m.
This is the first park lodge in Ohio to be constructed on state-owned parkland using local funds. It will offer 109 guest rooms and an upscale restaurant.
After discussing repairs,men steal woman's purse
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men who told a 79-year-old East LaClede Avenue woman that her spouting needed to be repaired were then allowed in the house Tuesday to point out other repair projects and, while inside, stole her purse, police said.
The men arrived in a black pickup truck and parked in the woman's driveway, where they first engaged her in conversation. She didn't realize the purse was missing until they left.
The purse contained house keys, medical cards, a checkbook and $10.
The suspects are each described as white, 6 feet, and 30 to 40 years old. One has a light complexion and red hair and weighs 250 pounds; the other has dark hair with slight facial growth and weighs 190 pounds.
Theft at mausoleum
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 77-year-old Austintown woman visiting a mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery on Mahoning Avenue on Tuesday afternoon had her purse stolen from her unlocked car, reports show.
The Westchester Drive woman told police the purse contained her driver's license, credit cards and $300.
The victim noticed a woman in a red car pull away who may have been involved.
