HUBBARD -- Hubbard High's Anthony Fidram improved to 4-0 during Tuesday's action in the K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament at the Hubbard High School gymnasium.
Fidram won his upperclass heavyweight battle with Liberty's Sparky Mohler when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
Fidram will battle Liberty's Mike Marvin in next week's title bout. Marvin is 3-0 and a three-time champion at lower weights. He won a hard-earned decision over Dave Yannotti from Fitch.
Female bouts
Tuesday's action included the conclusion of most of the female bouts.
Danielle Bell, a 13-year-old eighth grade student at James Hillman Middle School, used her fast hands and quick moves to defeat 2003 champion Joanna Button from Boardman for the female lightweight championship in the upperclass division.
Three underclass female champs were crowned -- featherweight Maria Cruz from Campbell, welterweight Janelle Conti from Canfield and super middleweight Kelly Hudy from Hubbard.
Cruz won a slugfest with Red Devils classmate Jocelyn Pannunzio, earning a split decision.
Conti slugged it out with Mohawk's Courtney Caughey, loading up and connecting with good right-hand shots to get a decision.
Hudy landed power punches to win a decision over Kristi Wilkos from Struthers.
Canfield connection
Canfield athletes won six of eight bouts, thanks to the Flick and Pankewicz brothers, who took three underclass bouts and one in the upperclass.
In an upperclass, super middleweight fight, Chris Pankewicz went to 3-0 with a blistering two-fisted attack that had the referee stop the contest with Fitch's George Swauger in the second round.
His younger brother, J.J. Pankewicz, won a tough decision over Todd Miller from West Middlesex in a middleweight battle.
Blake Flick, with a non-stop punching attack against William Rios of Campbell, went to 3-0 in a featherweight bout that the referee stopped in the second round.
His brother, Dustin, won his super middleweight bout, also in the underclass with a power-punching barrage that had the referee stop the contest in the third round.
Canfield's Steve Demaiolo won his upperclass lightweight bout.
Red Devils represented
Campbell Memorial also had participants in eight bouts. The Red Devils battlers finished with five wins, thanks to a hard-punching super lightweight in Kosta Tsagaris, who stopped Ryan Lubin in round two.
Light heavyweight Jake Guriceo, along with cruiserweights Jose Mateo and Anthony Ramun, continued the Campbell streak with decision victories.
Guriceo, an aggressive body puncher, had too many weapons for Liberty's Tyler Williams.
Guriceo (3-0) will battle Hubbard's Larry Starr (3-0) for the upperclass light heavyweight title next Tuesday.
