YSU revises its projected grad numbers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The number of students receiving degrees from Youngstown State University in 2003-04 was the highest in four years. YSU officials had earlier incorrectly reported that the number of graduates represented an eight-year high.
YSU's Records Office numbers show that 1,988 students graduated during the 2003-04 academic year, which includes commencements in the summer, fall and spring.
Officials had expected 2,047 graduates for 2003-04, but numbers tallied after the May 15 commencement came in 59 short of that number.
The 1,988 number is the highest since 1999-2000, when 2,011 students graduated.
The change in the number of graduates came because some students who had expected to graduate may not have passed a course or earned the required amount of credits, said Ron Cole, manager of news and information services at YSU. Of the 59 who had expected to graduate this spring, 18 are still being reviewed, Cole said, and the number of 2003-04 graduates could again fluctuate within the next weeks.
However, if all 18 meet requirements, the total would still fall short of the total graduates in 1999-2000.
