Reservists to return
VIENNA -- Twenty-four Air Force reservists from the 910th Maintenance Squadron are scheduled to return tonight between 8:45 and 9:30. The activated reservists spent 90 days deployed to an airbase in Kyrgyzstan supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The nearly 500 reservists activated marks the single largest activation in the history of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
Firefighters get pay raise
LIBERTY -- Township firefighters have accepted a fact-finder's recommendation giving them a 9-percent pay raise over three years, according to Firefighter Jason Kelly, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2075. The cost of prescription medications increases from $2 each to $20 for brand-name drugs and $10 for generics. They receive 2.5 percent this year, 3 percent in 2005 and 3.5 percent in 2006. Township trustees accepted the fact-finder's report May 17.
Man shoots himself in car
WARREN -- A 46-year-old Girard man shot and killed himself moments after city police stopped him for a traffic violation. Police stopped a car driven by Randy L. Stottlemire of Secrist Drive around 11:50 p.m. Friday on Second Street. Moments after the car was stopped, officers heard a gunshot. When they approached the car, they saw that Stottlemire had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Police said an aggravated-robbery warrant had been issued Friday for Stottlemire. Police think he may have been responsible for robbing local bars.
Sentenced to prison
WARREN -- A 47-year-old Hubbard Township man, convicted of several charges stemming from secretly videotaping family members, has been sentenced to six years in prison. Michael Santoriella Jr. was sentenced Monday by Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Santoriella was convicted earlier this month of nine counts of misdemeanor voyeurism, two counts of felony pandering obscenity and one felony count of illegal use of a minor in a nudity-oriented material or performance. The indictment says police confiscated more than 100 videotapes dating to 1997. Prosecutors said the tapes show his stepsons having sex with their girlfriends and also shows family members in the bathroom of the home.
Girl with gun faces charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A handgun found inside a purse at The Rayen School led to the arrest Monday of Cassandra Allen, 15, of Idlewood Avenue, police said. The girl, who acknowledged that the purse and gun were hers, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and taken to the juvenile justice center. The arrest report doesn't indicate if the handgun was loaded or why the girl brought it to school.
Jail receives certificate
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Jail has been awarded a certificate by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for successfully complying with Ohio's 2004 jail standards. The focus of this year's inspection was reception/release, security, housing, fire drills, medical, recreation/programming, administrative segregation, staffing and jail administrator training. Sheriff Randall A. Wellington and his staff were commended for professionalism and leadership by Reginald A. Wilkinson, ODRC director in Columbus.
Theft of newspapers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday, 38 copies of The Vindicator were taken from boxes on South Avenue and Midlothian Boulevard, reports show. The thefts were reported to police Monday afternoon.
Graduation speaker
LIBERTY -- Patricia Rose, president of the Better Business Bureau in Youngstown, will be the guest speaker at the Youngstown ITT Technical Institute's graduation ceremonies at 6 p.m. June 3 at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex here. Rose has been with the Better Business Bureau for 19 years and became president in January 1995. She will speak to 67 graduates receiving degrees in computer drafting and design, computer and electronics engineering technology, information technology-computer network systems, information technology-multimedia, information technology-Web development and information technology-software applications and programming.
