Police receive another grant to fund Street Crime Initiative
BOARDMAN -- Trustees have awarded the police department a $50,000 grant to pay for overtime work done in the department's Street Crime Initiative.
Trustees have awarded the department grants twice before for the initiative.
Capt. Jack Nichols said the previous two Street Crime Initiatives were a success, surpassing the goals and expectations of police officials. He said the new initiative will have some added goals.
The initiative will run from June 1 through September. The grant will allow three officers per day to work overtime six days a week throughout the four months.
Police, during this initiative, will work closer with the Ohio Adult Parole Authority to make sure those on parole in the township are keeping their end of their parole agreements. Juvenile offenders on probation or house arrest also will be a focus of the initiative.
Officers in the Street Crimes Unit said they will be checking bars for underage drinking violations. Drug enforcement and prostitution will be targeted in certain township areas, the officers said. They would not say what areas are being marked for drug enforcement.
Nichols also presented trustees with six checks totaling more than $58,000 from six cases in which township officers worked with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and cash or property was seized. Nichols said the township also will take possession of two high-end sport utility vehicles seized in drug arrests.
