Condition improves
AKRON -- The condition of a man wounded by gunfire last week is improving, police said. Jason A. Boggs of West Park Avenue remains in Akron City Hospital with a bullet wound of the lower back.
Police had said there was concern for Boggs' life because of blood loss, but said Monday that he is improving. He is not cooperating with detectives, police said, and there is no motive or suspects. Boggs was at a North Adams Street residence when shot Wednesday.
Firefighters get pay raise
LIBERTY -- Township firefighters have accepted a fact-finder's recommendation giving them a 9 percent pay raise over three years, according to Firefighter Jason Kelly, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2075. The cost of prescription medications increases from $2 each to $20 for brand-name drugs and $10 for generics. They receive 2.5 percent this year, 3 percent in 2005 and 3.5 percent in 2006. Township trustees accepted the fact-finder's report May 17.
Reservists to return
VIENNA -- Twenty-four Air Force reservists from the 910th Maintenance Squadron are scheduled to return tonight between 8:45 and 9:30. The activated reservists spent 90 days deployed to an air base in Kyrgyzstan supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The nearly 500 reservists activated marks the single largest activation in the history of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
Man shoots himself in car
WARREN -- A 46-year-old Girard man shot and killed himself moments after city police stopped him for a traffic violation. Police stopped a car driven by Randy L. Stottlemire, of Secrist Drive, around 11:50 p.m. Friday on Second Street. Moments after the car was stopped, officers heard a gunshot. When they approached the car, they saw that Stottlemire had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Police said an aggravated robbery warrant had been issued Friday for Stottlemire.
Sentenced to prison
WARREN -- A 47-year-old Hubbard Township man, convicted of several charges stemming from secretly videotaping family members, has been sentenced to six years in prison. Michael Santoriella Jr. was sentenced Monday by Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Santoriella was convicted earlier this month of nine counts of misdemeanor voyeurism, two counts of felony pandering obscenity and one felony count of illegal use of a minor in a nudity-oriented material or performance. The indictment says police confiscated more than 100 videotapes dating back to 1997. Prosecutors said the tapes show his stepsons having sex with their girlfriends and also shows family members in the bathroom of the home.
Merchants plan a party
HOWLAND -- Merchants in The Market Place, a shopping development on East Market Street, will have an outdoor party from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in anticipation of the closing of the East Market Street bridge. The event is intended to make consumers aware they can drive to the shopping complex even after the nearby bridge is closed, said Kelly Goga, spokeswoman for complex owner Lewis Development. The event will feature free food and a chance to win a half-carat diamond. A local radio station will be broadcasting live. The bridge, which carries motorists over Mosquito Creek and under state Route 82, is expected to be closed for replacement between June 7 and Oct. 4.
Safety programs planned
HOWLAND -- The Howland Fire Department's special operations division is providing a public education program in June to Mahoning Valley residents. "Safe Community Solutions" will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 5 at the Home Depot parking lot on Niles-Cortland Road. It will provide programs such as bicycle helmet safety inspection and rodeo, car safety seat inspection, fire prevention program with fire education vehicle and fingerprinting for children.
Lordstown water testing
LORDSTOWN -- The water department will conduct flow tests for one day beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The water may be discolored but is safe to drink.
