Optimist Club donatescalling cards for troops
CORTLAND -- The Bazetta-Cortland Optimist Club is donating $5,000 worth of calling cards so servicemen and women in Iraq can call home.
The club used money raised from bingo and concession sales at ballgames to buy 1,004 calling cards, club vice president Paul Hovis said.
Club officers will meet with officials of the 910th Airlift Wing next week to arrange the distribution of the cards, he said.
Phone calls from Iraq to the United States are very expensive for soldiers, Hovis said.
"Usually, they do everything by computer when they get a chance, but we thought it would be nice to get some of them phone cards so they can talk over the phone," he said.
He said he hoped the cards could be distributed to people from this area.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Forum Health will conduct a child vehicle safety-seat check June 6 in conjunction with the annual telethon for Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital.

Motor vehicle crashes are the top killer of children ages 2 to 14, said Lark Dickstein, coordinator for the Region 4 Occupant Protection program.
She added that 90 percent of child safety seats are misused. Many people underestimate the importance of using the appropriate child safety seat or proper fit and installation, she said.
