XYOUNGSTOWN -- Butler Institute of American Art provided the setting for the May 21 wedding of Philecia Sherri Smith of Youngstown and James Thomas Carpenter III of Boardman. Bishop Norman L. Wagner officiated at the 6 a.m. ceremony.
The bride is a daughter of Sherri Helene Smith of Youngstown. Parents of the prospective groom are James Jr. and Deborah Carpenter of Boardman.
A reception also took place at The Butler. The newlyweds are honeymooning on a Western Caribbean cruise. They will live in Boardman.
Beading and embroidery highlighted the bride's tulle over satin gown designed with a tank-style bodice and chapel-length train.
The couple's wedding was broadcast on WFMJ, with everything from the bride's dress to the honeymoon voted on by television viewers.
Mrs. Carpenter graduated from Youngstown State University with an associate degree in applied sciences in information technology. She is employed as a secretary at Mahoning County Educational Service Center.
Mr. Carpenter is employed as an investment representative with First Place Financial Corp. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in finance at John Carroll University in Cleveland.
Honor attendants were Natasha Colvin of Youngstown and Vesta White of Boardman. Bridesmaids were Angela Carpenter and Robin Carpenter, both of Boardman, the groom's sisters; Renessa Banks of Cleveland, the groom's cousin; and Felicia Mobley of Youngstown. They wore champagne-colored dresses. The groom's nieces, Monica and Myra Corley of Boardman, were flower girls.
Sharing the duties of best man were Jonathan Carpenter of Boardman, the groom's brother, and Jason Whitehead of Boardman. Groomsmen were Gary Brantley Jr. of Boardman and Edward Bolling Jr. of Canfield, the groom's cousins; Bradley Smith of Youngstown, the bride's brother; and D.J. Colvin Jr. of Youngstown. The groom's cousin, Joseph Banks of Cleveland, was ring bearer.
