PREP BASEBALL TOURNAMENT Maplewood advances to Division IV regional

The Rockets defeated Ashtabula Sts. John and Paul, 7-1.
EUCLID -- Senior Matt Chronister pitched his best game of the season as Maplewood High beat previously undefeated Ashtabula Sts. John & amp; Paul 7-1 for the Division IV district baseball championship Thursday.
"He kept them totally off balance all game," Maplewood coach Mark Trevelline said of Chronister. "That was his best pitching performance of the year. They only had four baserunners, and three were with two out. They never really threatened."
Chronister yielded three singles and a walk. He struck out seven.
The Rockets scored in the first inning, and the Heralds (18-1) tied it at 1 in the top of the second.
Maplewood used a walk, four consecutive singles and an error to go in front 5-1 after two.
"The bottom of our order came through today with a big production," said Trevelline. "The eighth and ninth hitter were each on base three times."
Dan Morrison, Brian Hivick and Jeremy Mohorick each doubled for Maplewood (20-5), and Jake Abbott, Morrison and Doug Wajda each had two hits.
Maplewood will make its third straight appearance in the Elyria regional next Friday at 2 p.m. The Rockets lost in the regional championship game the past two seasons.
"That was our best performance. Physically, mentally and preparation-wise, it was a perfect 10," said Trevelline.
