LISBON -- The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash in Hanover Township that sent two people to area hospitals. The patrol said Jake Feldman, 90, of Lisbon was taken from the scene by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in critical condition. A passenger in Feldman's car, Helen Beadle, 67, of Salineville, was taken to Salem Community Hospital and later transferred by helicopter to Cleveland Metro Health Center. Cleveland Metro public relations officials could not be reached. According to the patrol, Feldman was driving south on Teegarden Road around 4 p.m. Thursday and stopped his car at a stop sign at state Route 172. He then tried a left turn onto Route 172 and his car was struck by a pickup truck driven by Frederick Brenneman, 57, of Salem, who was driving west on Route 172. Brenneman was not injured.
Firefighters' fund-raiser
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- The West Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department will have a Car Cruise from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dairy Queen Brazier at 3498 Sharon Road. There will be prizes, games, craft tables and a Chinese auction to raise funds for the fire department. Rain date is June 27, from 3 to 7 p.m.
Helmets, safety lessons
SANDY LAKE, Pa. -- Free bicycle helmets for kids and a variety of safety programs will be the order of the day Saturday at the Lake Wilhelm Marina in Goddard State Park.
Goddard Safety Days, designed for children from kindergarten through grade 12, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the event of rain, the event will be moved to Sunday.
Bicycle Safety is the featured program, with free fitted helmets to be given to children. There will also be safety programs on fire, water, boating, water sports, guns, outdoor activities, hiking, food, cardiovascular health and more.
The park is five minutes from Interstate 79. Take exit 130 to Pa. Route 358 west and follow the signs to Lake Wilhelm Road, which leads directly to the park. Park maps are also available at the state park Web site at www.dcnr.state.pa.us.
Poster contest winners
YOUNGSTOWN -- Winners of an anti-litter poster contest were honored Thursday at the Mahoning County Courthouse.
The contest asked pupils attending Mahoning County schools to create posters that discourage littering and encourage recycling.
Eight pupils were selected from more than 600 entrants. The Green Team, the recycling division of Mahoning County, sponsored the contest.
The eight winning posters will be made into place mats to be used at 14 area restaurants.
The winners of The Green Team's poster contest are: Kristie Griffith, St. Matthias; Jill Jordan, St. Nicholas; Ryan Marshall, Boardman Center Middle School; Mackenzie Mulligan, Poland Union Elementary; Melanie Niarhos, Robinwood Lane; Cody Schlabaugh, Poland North Elementary; Hailey Sullivan, Springfield Elementary; Lashawna Wagner, St. Joseph the Provider.
Road work hiring
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees have hired two companies to complete the township's summer road repair program. Trustees agreed at a special meeting Thursday to pay Larry Murphy Construction $135,352 to tar and chip various roads. Cleveland Asphalt Inc. will be paid $104,923 to complete the resurfacing program.
2 jailed in robbery
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Two men were in Lawrence County Jail this morning accused of a home invasion-style robbery and of firing shots at a car. Borough police said Jason J. Dorsey, 28, no address available, and Randy Shawn Rodgers, 38, of Portersville Road, Ellwood City, were charged with robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property and theft by unlawful taking. Police said two men with guns forced their way into a Crescent Avenue home at 10:46 p.m. Wednesday and demanded money and drugs. They pistol-whipped one of the residents, police said. The men ran off, shooting at a parked car as they left, police said. Police said they later found Dorsey in a car described by witnesses as leaving the area. Police searched Rodgers' home and found two handguns and masks. Dorsey is being held on $30,000 bond and Rodgers on $35,000 bond, police said.
