DISTRICT TENNIS Spartan qualifies for state
Bryant Salcedo will see Canfield's Matt Waigand and Kevin Cuppler there.
ROCKY RIVER -- Boardman High's Bryant Salcedo and Canfield's doubles team of Kevin Kuppler and Matt Waigand qualified for the state tournament after Thursday's action in the Division I district tennis tournament at Tri-City Park.
Salcedo and Kuppler-Waigand both won two matches.
Salcedo beat Gordan Zanic (Elyria) 6-0, 6-2, then toppled Mike Rasner of Hudson 6-2, 6-1.
On Saturday, Salcedo will meet Brad Noel of Westlake.
The top six individuals and doubles teams qualified for the state event.
Howland's Ryan Trapp won his opening match by beating Alex Justiniani of Strongsville, 7-5, 6-4, then lost to Chardon's David Rozek, 6-0, 6-0. Trapp is still in contention for fifth place and a state berth.
In doubles, Kuppler-Waigand beat John Justice and Mike Durr of North Olmsted, 6-4, 6-1, then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Solon's Ryan Goldstein and Adam Lawrence.
On Saturday, Kuppler and Waigand will play Nick Davis and Rob Dennis of Akron Firestone.
Division II
CANTON -- Ryan Baroff of Liberty split two matches in the district tournament at Weis Park.
The area's other two singles players and both doubles teams lost their initial match and were eliminated.
The top five individuals and doubles teams qualified for the state meet.
Baroff defeated Weston Corogin of Lake Ridge Academy, 6-2, 6-1. He then fell to Gui Schils of University School, 6-1, 6-0.
Kelton Person of Ursuline lost to Matt Royer of Mentor Lake Catholic, 6-4, 6-4. Also, Richard Baroff of Liberty fell to Jeremy Stein of Beachwood, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Two Poland doubles teams competed and both lost their first match.
Dom Rosselli and Chad Ruehs lost to Gabe Weil and William Fields of Hawken, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while Luke Duchek and Dom Somers lost to Kevin Rowe and Jonathan Bruckman of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 6-4, 6-2.
