YOUNGSTOWN -- Danielle Carter, 29, of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was arrested Thursday on drug charges after police found 33 packages of suspected crack cocaine on a dresser and 17 more in the cassette compartment of a stereo in her apartment, reports show. The officers also found a .25-caliber handgun under a love seat and a .380-caliber handgun in a closet. Police said they went to the apartment in response to complaints about drug activity and were let in by Carter when they knocked on the door.
Pretrial hearing set
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pretrial detention hearing will be Thursday in federal court for Gabriel M. Eguizabal-Orozco, 29, of Modesto, Calif., who was arrested Wednesday by an FBI task force after 30 kilos (66 pounds) of cocaine were found in his tractor-trailer in Austintown.
He is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He made his initial appearance Thursday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Youngstown. Defense attorney Neal G. Atway said Eguizabal-Orozco was hauling lettuce destined for the Tamarkin Co. distribution warehouse in Austintown when he was arrested. The government has asked that Eguizabal-Orozco remain in custody pending trial.
Fatal gas-well accident
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- A worker on a gas-well project on Probst Road in Greene Township was fatally injured in an accident at the site.
Charles H. Zimmerman, 49, of Duck Creek Road, Berlin Center, was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m. Monday in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon in Greenville.
The Mercer County coroner's office said he died of blunt force trauma to the head in the accident at 2 p.m.
Monument dedication
MINERAL RIDGE -- A new monument bought by the Mineral Ridge Firemen's Association will be dedicated at the Mineral Ridge fire station on state Route 46 at 7 p.m. Memorial Day.
The stone is in place in front of the station and is to honor all firefighters from the former Mineral Ridge Fire Department and the current Weathersfield Fire Department. The Mineral Ridge Firemen's Association paid about $5,000 for the memorial, although its actual cost was $6,000. The memorial was ordered through Lane Funeral Homes, based in Austintown, and owner Joe Lane approved the donation to cover the remaining cost of the stone.
Fire Chief Randy Pugh said that the department is inviting all former firefighters to the ceremony. The event is open to the public.
Domestic-violence charge
STRUTHERS -- Jacob P. Finley, 24, of state Route 213, Steubenville, is slated to go on trial in municipal court Aug. 2. He is charged with domestic violence and is free on $500 bond.
Finley was arrested early Wednesday after he broke the screen door at his girlfriend's Sexton Street home during an argument and then, the police report states, repeatedly threatened to kill her, punch her in the face and hold her head under water.
Police found Finley sitting in his girlfriend's full bathtub fully clothed. The shower rack had been pulled from the wall, the report says, and there was blood on the walls.
Poster contest winners
YOUNGSTOWN -- Winners of an anti-litter poster contest were honored Thursday at the Mahoning County Courthouse.
The contest asked pupils attending Mahoning County schools to create posters that discourage littering and encourage recycling.
Eight pupils were selected from more than 600 entrants. The Green Team, the recycling division of Mahoning County, sponsored the contest.
The eight winning posters will be made into place mats to be used at 14 area restaurants.
The winners of The Green Team's poster contest are: Kristie Griffith, St. Matthias; Jill Jordan, St. Nicholas; Ryan Marshall, Boardman Center Middle School; Mackenzie Mulligan, Poland Union Elementary; Melanie Niarhos, Robinwood Lane; Cody Schlabaugh, Poland North Elementary; Hailey Sullivan, Springfield Elementary; and Lashawna Wagner, St. Joseph the Provider.
Hired to do road work
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees have hired two companies to complete the township's summer road repair program. Trustees agreed at a special meeting Thursday to pay Larry Murphy Construction $135,352 to tar and chip various roads. Cleveland Asphalt Inc. will be paid $104,923 to complete the resurfacing program.
