Teacher contract

Teacher contract
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Sharpsville Area School District teachers know how much money the school district is willing to give them in a new contract. The only thing that remains to be resolved is how that sum will be worked into the teacher salary schedule.
Teachers have a multistep salary scale based on years of service and level of education, and raises proposed in a new contract have to be worked into that scale, said Mike Kalpich, chief negotiator for the teachers.
That should be resolved at next Wednesday's bargaining session with the school board, he said. It's the last step in finalizing a new agreement to replace a contract that expired nearly a year ago.
No terms of the proposal have been revealed.
Crash injures man
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- An Amish man injured when his horse-drawn buggy went left of center and collided with an SUV on Beatty School Road is improving.
Edward Byler, of Pine Road, Hartstown, was flown from the scene of Friday's crash to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he was initially listed in critical condition. The hospital reported his condition has since been upgraded to stable.
Byler's horse died in the 2:50 a.m. accident in Salem Township.
The driver of the SUV and two of her four passengers suffered minor injuries, police said.

No action will be taken.

Attempted break-in
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police said someone tried to break into a Hamilton Street home.
Police said the resident's son was on the couch when he heard someone kicking in the door at 9:06 p.m. Wednesday. The boy, whose age was not released, ran upstairs to his sister and called police.
Police said the family dog chased off the intruder.
Child porn charges
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Union Township man was in the Lawrence County Jail this morning on charges of child pornography.
Pennsylvania State Police said David Eugene Pounds, 21, of Elmwood Street, was charged with sexual abuse of children, obscene or other sexual materials and performances and criminal use of a communication facility.
He is accused of sending child pornography over the Internet from Jan. 10 through May 17.
He was arraigned by District Justice J.V. Lamb and placed in jail after failing to post $25,000 bond.
Pool problems
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- City council's plans to open all but six of Pittsburgh's outdoor public pools have dried up.
Six members of city council last week proposed using money earmarked for projects in their districts to open as many as nine more pools in addition to 16 pools that will be opened using money raised by foundations.
The foundations banded together and raised about $850,000, believing the city wouldn't have the money.
City council members reconsidered their plans amid complaints from the foundations and reports that the city wouldn't be able to train enough lifeguards before the pools opened next month.
Although only half of the city's pools will be open this summer, people will be able to use them for free.
All 19 recreation centers and all but six of the city's 31 outdoor pools closed last August because of budget constraints. This year's budget includes no money for the pools and centers.
