YOUNGSTOWN -- A large brown dog was shot to death by police Wednesday after it bit a woman at Madison and Foster avenues on the North Side. Sharon Mikulak, 40, of Griffith Street was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for bites to her left arm and left leg. Three police officers who were in the area on an unrelated call around 11:30 a.m. heard a woman scream and went to investigate. After biting Mikulak, the dog charged a man walking in the area. The man was able to separate himself from the dog without being bitten. The dog then charged the officers, one of whom shot the dog five times with a 12-gauge shotgun, reports show.
Motorcyclist injured
YOUNGSTOWN -- Van Clark, 67, of Southwest Boulevard, Warren, was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with a head injury after a motorcycle accident at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Clark was riding his 2003 Harley Classic on Interstate 680 northbound at the Route 711 entrance ramp, roughly 600 feet north of Division Street, when he drove off the right side of the road, said Detective Sgt. Rick Hart of the accident investigation unit. Clark lost control when his motorcycle traveled through the grass, hit the curb at the entrance ramp and slid, Hart said.
Service members' return
VIENNA -- Eleven members of the 910th Airlift Wing's 757th Squadron were scheduled to return home today from a 60-day deployment to an air base in Kuwait, used for the movement of people and supplies in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
Money stolen from bar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Both front doors at the Army & amp; Navy bar on Logan Avenue were open when police arrived at 2:20 a.m. today in response to a burglar alarm. The outer steel door was undamaged, but the inner wooden-door window appeared as if it had been removed, then replaced. Police found several quarter rolls and money bags on the floor. An undetermined amount of cash was taken. Police said the outer door was not locked when the business closed at 1 a.m.
Charged with burglary
CAMPBELL -- William C. Stitzel, 28, of Fifth Street is free on $7,500 bond pending a preliminary hearing May 25 on a burglary charge. Stitzel was arrested about 4:20 a.m. Sunday inside a neighbor's house on Fifth Street.
Fall near moving car
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a Deer Creek Apartments teen was injured after he fell while running alongside a moving car Wednesday evening. The boy, 16, had injuries to his right shoulder and hip and the back of his head and was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, reports state. The Deer Creek teen told police the car was driven by another teen who had borrowed his hat. He saw the hat in the back of the car at about 7 p.m. in the parking lot of Le Chateau apartments on New Hampshire Court and reached in to take it, he said. The driver then pulled the car forward with the Deer Creek teen's arm in the window. The Deer Creek teen said he ran along the car as it sped up, and that when he couldn't keep up, he fell. When the teen fell, the driver then stopped the car, got out, and punched him in the jaw, reports state. The driver then drove away.
School levy discussion
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Springfield Board of Education will meet in special session at 8 p.m. June 1 in the intermediate school library to discuss the school levy renewal. No action will be taken.
Water boiling order lifted
AUSTINTOWN -- The Youngstown Water Department has lifted the boil order for businesses on Interstate Boulevard and for the Arby's restaurant and Fairfield Inn on state Route 46. Water to those businesses was shut off Sunday as part of the project to widen state Route 46. The water department recommended that the businesses boil their water after it was turned on Monday morning. The department said it has since tested the water and determined that it is safe.
