SALEM -- Newton Falls High senior Anthony Barnes set the only record at the Division II district track and field meet Wednesday at Reilly Stadium.
Barnes, on his last try in the finals, went 21 feet, 7 inches in the long jump, to shatter the old mark (21-33/4 ) set in 1994. But, it was a bittersweet day for Barnes, who was disqualified for a false start in the 100-meter dash semifinals.
"This was the worst day of the season for me," said Barnes, who holds the area's best mark in the long jump (22-101/4 ). "I am happy to break the record, but it wasn't my goal coming here. Luckily I had the bad day at the district, [it was] not the regional and hopefully I'll do better at Ravenna."
The top four individuals and relays advanced to next week's regional at Ravenna High.
Warriors leading
After three boys events, West Branch led with 21 points and Ursuline was second with 19. Salem, West Branch, Southeast and Mogadore's girls shared first place after three events with 17 points apiece.
West Branch's Chase Adams took first place in the discus with a throw of 148-3. Steve Darmon, Christopher Sinick, Paul Robinson and Scott Sinick of Field won the 4x800 relay in 8 minutes, 15.51 seconds.
Poland's 4x800 relay of Kim Brogan, Sarah Anderson, Lauren Fithian and Colleen Moran placed first (9:49.54).
"It was our goal to come in here and win," said Brogan, "and we did it in our best time so far this season."
Added Anderson: "We all knew we had to go out and run as hard as we could to advance or go home."
Fithian said there was a lot of competition and Moran said that Poland was concerned about Minerva, which was second (9:55.97) and West Branch, which finished third (9:59.49).
Wins shot put
Salem's Aubree Horning placed first in the shot put with a toss of 38-11.
"I am not satisfied with today," said Horning. "The throw isn't good enough to out of the regional."
Horning has the area's best throw this season (40-1).
"I lost to a girl from Bay Village by a foot at an indoor meet last winter and she's thrown 42 [feet] this season and a girl from Trinity has thrown 43," said Horning.
Both girls will be in the shot put at the Ravenna regional.
Field's Heather Walker won the high jump (5-0).
The meet continues Friday. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m. with running events at 5.
