Despite her aloha spirit,Trias is booted off 'Idol'
NEW YORK -- Jasmine Trias was voted off "American Idol" after a longer journey than some thought she deserved, leaving Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo to sing off in next week's two-hour finale.
With her trademark sunny style, the 17-year-old from Hawaii kept smiling even as she learned of her removal Wednesday night from the Fox singing competition.
"I just want to thank all my fans for believing in me and embracing my talent and for making my dreams come true," Trias said. "It's been such an honor to share the aloha spirit with the rest of America."
She also got to toss a coin, deciding that DeGarmo will sing first next week.
"I love you, Jazzy!" DeGarmo and Barrino said as the threesome shared a group hug.
"I love you too, guys," Trias said, trying not to cry.
Logic suggested Trias would get the boot in viewer voting -- she was the weakest of the three singers remaining in the competition Tuesday night.
Singer Paul Simon gets2004 Joe DiMaggio Award
NEW YORK -- Earlier this week, Paul Simon picked up the 2004 Joe DiMaggio Award at the Waldorf benefit for New York's Xaverian High School and Loyola School. Simon penned "Mrs. Robinson" and performed, with Art Garfunkel, the 1968 theme to Mike Nichols' sublime "The Graduate," which includes the line "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?"
But the famously serious Yankee Clipper was not amused when they finally met, Simon relayed at the ceremony.
"These were the days of the hippie," Simon recalled. "I think he thought it was some kind of mockery that he wasn't privy to." The centerfielder told Simon he hadn't "gone" anywhere and was doing commercials for -- who can forget? -- Mr. Coffee and Bowery Savings Bank.
"He didn't understand," Simon said. "I tried to tell him that it wasn't in any way meant negatively about him." The song must have grown on Joltin' Joe. Every time they met afterward, Simon remembered, "he was always very affectionate."
Incidentally, Simon and his singer wife, Edie Brickell, are hosting a weekend fund-raiser for Sen. John Kerry at their Greenwich, Conn., spread.
Abdul gives thumbs downto nail salon she's suing
LOS ANGELES -- "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul is reportedly planning to sue the nail salon that botched her manicure last month, reports TV Guide Online.
Abdul tells "Celebrity Justice" the hack job left her with a severe nail infection that became so serious she had to have her thumbnail surgically removed. She says she almost lost her entire thumb.
Abdul says Chinoiserie, an upscale nail salon in the L.A. suburb of Studio City, is responsible for the injury. She says she cried out in pain when a manicurist poked her in the thumb and that when she left the salon she sucked on her thumb and tasted blood.
Abdul also tells "CJ" that the salon called a friend of hers four times that night to ask how she was doing.
While Abdul has been joking about the incident on recent "Idol" broadcasts, she is extremely concerned over the matter and will sue for the substantial medical bills, lost profits and extreme, ongoing pain and suffering she says she endured because of the salon's negligence.
