Woman is robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 31-year-old Sunshine Avenue woman was the victim of a robbery around 12:30 a.m. today. The victim told police four men kicked her door open as she lay on the living room couch.
Some type of material, possibly a shirt or pillow case, was put over her head and she was taken to the basement at gunpoint. One intruder stayed with the woman while the others ransacked her house.
After hearing the four men leave in a loud-sounding vehicle, the woman went to a convenience store to call police. Police learned that the woman had recently cashed a $3,000 temporary disability check, and roughly $2,500 of it was in her purse, which the suspects took, along with gold bracelets, a computer and printer, PlayStation and cell phone.
Plaque to be presented
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- State Rep. John Boccieri of New Middletown, D-61st, a captain with the Air Force Reserve's 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, will be presented a commemorative plaque on behalf of area veterans at the Honoring Veterans Day event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdayat the New Middletown Post Office. The event also will feature recruiters from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
Band sale theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- The treasurer of The Rayen School band parents club reported to police Monday that $5,402 (earned from a fruit sale in November 2003) was never deposited into the club account at National City Bank. The suspect, an Ohio Avenue man, has had the money since November and has been unreachable since mid-December, reports show. The theft case has been turned over to the detective division.
Special meeting
AUSTINTOWN -- Township trustees will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in township hall for a closed-door executive session to discuss employee contracts.
Fire damages house
AUSTINTOWN -- A house on Brockton Drive received about $25,000 in damage from a fire, firefighters said. Stephanie Agler of 1798 Brockton Drive was cooking on her stove about 5 p.m. Monday when she caught an item on fire, firefighters said. There were no injuries.
Scrap steel stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- About 10,000 pounds of scrap steel was reported stolen from an Austintown business, police said. Precision of Ohio on Hendricks Road reported the theft Monday even though the theft probably occurred more than a week ago.
After the manager discovered the missing scrap steel -- the estimated worth was not given -- an employee told him that he saw a truck leave the side of the business, where the steel was being stored, on May 8, a police report states.
Damage from lightning
HOWLAND -- A lightning strike at Forum Health Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital at 9:28 p.m. Monday damaged the hospital's alarm system, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.
