SOFTBALL Ursuline's Cearfoss earns 50th pitching triumph

YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High junior softball pitcher Maureen Cearfoss tuned up for Wednesday's Division III district semifinal game by throwing a one-hitter as the Irish defeated Steubenville Central Catholic 1-0 Monday at Wick Recreation Area.
It was the 50th career win for Cearfoss (19-5), who struck out six and didn't walk a batter in setting a school record for wins.
Cearfoss also holds the single season record for wins (19) and strikeouts (163). Cearfoss has pitched 152 innings this season.
The Irish (20-5) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, catcher Vannessa Dickson hit a double and scored on a single by Jenna Vrabel.
The Crusaders' (22-3) losing pitcher, Meredith Hitchcock (18-2), allowed three hits.
The Irish will meet Middlefield Cardinal in a district semifinal Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Grand Valley Middle School.
Mooney 4, Champion 1
CHAMPION -- Petrina Morocco, Dana Palazzo and Gina Brunetti each had RBI singles for the Cardinals.
Morocco also hit a double for Mooney (19-8).
Kasey Karr and Jaclyn Carpenter each had two hits for Champion (18-5).
McDonald 12, South Range 7
McDONALD -- Tomisa Sangregorio had a triple and a double to spark the Blue Devils (2-14) in the Inter-County League game.
The Raiders (8-11, 4-8) led 6-1 after two innings but allowed eight runs in the fifth.
Western Reserve 4, United 2
HANOVERTON -- Katie Harmon got the win and drove in a run in the seventh inning as Western Reserve scored three runs in the top of the seventh.
Macy Marra added two hits for the Blue Devils (16-6).
Chelsea Sheets had a double and Megan McCartney had two hits and an RBI for United (20-7).
Northwest 7, West Branch 0
BELOIT -- The Warriors (11-15, 3-11 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) were held to just two singles, both by Ellie Geiger.
Northwest is 14-8, 8-6.
