SCHOOL DISTRICT Board OKs summer swims for residents of McDonald



One of the programs will be geared toward youths; the other toward adults.

McDONALD -- The McDonald school board has approved two new pool programs designed to enhance community use of school facilities. Both will be at the high school pool starting in June.
The summer pool programs may be followed by a winter basketball program at the high school and by a computer learning program, Superintendent Michael Wasser said Monday.
Wasser said that he has been meeting with members of village council to come up with programs which would allow the village to make use of facilities at the schools.
The programs approved by the board Monday are: Swimming lessons for village youths from ages 3 up to sixth grade and a warm water pool program for village residents 18 and over. The latter will be geared toward those with arthritis and muscle aches, as well as those who just want to exercise.
Councilman B.J. Farr, head of council's Parks and Buildings Committee, said that residents who want more information on the programs should contact him at village hall.
Youth program
Forms will be available next week for the youth program which will be held Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting June 8. The first session will be for evaluation. Registration forms must be returned by June 2. The one-hour lessons will run for eight weeks. Instructor will be Tegan Stitt, a swim coach at Fairhaven School.
There will be no charge for the lessons, which are being paid for by the village as part of it's summer recreation programs.
Adult activities
The adult program will offer structured warm water activities at the high school pool.The cost for each class will be $3. The eight-week program will be Mondays and Wednesdays and begins the week of June 7. No registration is required. The instructor will be Dee Dee Howard, who has worked with the Youngstown Easter Seals Association.
In other business Monday, high school Principal John LaRocca said that the Baccalaureate ceremony for graduating seniors will be at 2 p.m. May 23 in the high school auditorium. Graduation is set for 2 p.m. May 30 in the auditorium. A class of 60 graduates was approved by the board.
