PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Pupil raises enough money to go abroad under program

He has received $4,600 to participate in the program.
GIRARD -- Sixth-grader Michael Stacchiotti will be leaving for Great Britain on July 1 after raising enough money to become a student ambassador.
The 11-year-old, son of James and Jodee Stacchiotti of Krehl Avenue, has raised $4,600 by working for it and through contributions.
He is one of 40 Ohio pupils who will participate in People to People, an ambassador program.
Michael's effort to raise the money was highlighted in the Jan. 1 editions of The Vindicator.
Mrs. Stacchiotti said a Poland woman that the family refers to as "the saint" contributed $2,000.
Michael received the balance by selling candy door to door, working his route as a Vindicator carrier, and obtaining business contributions. Mrs. Stacchiotti works at Costello Candies on West Liberty Street in Girard.
The People to People program, based in Spokane, Wash., provides opportunities for pupils to explore domestic and foreign destinations, learning about their history, government, economy and culture.
Michael will visit England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland during the program that was started in the 1950s by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Michael was recommended by his teachers at Girard Intermediate School.
