Hubbard couple funds dietetics scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mark and Kathy Thomson of Hubbard have established a trust to provide scholarships for Youngstown State University students studying dietetics.
In recognition of the trust, YSU will name the Fountain Commons Lounge in Kilcawley Center after the Thomsons, who are Hubbard natives and graduates of Hubbard High School. A dedication of the lounge was held Monday.
Mark, a decorated Vietnam veteran, worked 30 years with United Parcel Service as a driver, supervisor, center manager, division human-resource manager and district safety manager before retiring in April 2000.
Kathy worked in the pharmacy of St. Elizabeth Hospital until she and Mark started their family. Kathy remained at home, raising two children. She also worked for Cellular One.
The couple's daughter, Shannon, received an associate's degree in dietetics and a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition from YSU.
Shannon and her husband, James Stevens, live in Brookfield. The Thomsons' other child, Mark, lives in Concord, Calif., with his wife, Kelly.
