YOUNGSTOWN -- Thomas A. Belcik, 30, of Bouquet Avenue was charged with driving under the influence after his car crashed into the CVS drugstore on Mahoning Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Saturday.
When police arrived, Belcik was trying to back away from the building and was ordered three times to shut off the engine, reports show. His car struck a gas meter on the side of the building and firefighters were called to handle the gas leak, police said.
Belcik told officers that he was a little "buzzed" but glad he didn't hit anyone.
Law field memorial
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Bar Association's memorial committee will honor attorneys and judges who died in the past year during a service at 11 a.m. May 27 in Domestic Relations Court.
Those being memorialized are: James M. Modarelli Jr., Judge John J. Lynch Jr., James M. Mumaw, Arthur N.K. Friedman, Robert Hendrickson, James Edward Mitchell, Evelyn Bernard-Lucas, Richard G. Bauman, Samuel H. Copperman, Jack C. Harris and Emmet J. Tyrrell.
Crime watch speaker
NORTH LIMA -- Doug Lamplugh, special agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will speak at the Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting at 7 p.m. May 25 at Shepherd of the Valley's activity center, 911 Sharrott Road (corner of Western Reserve and Sharrott Roads).
Lamplugh will speak on the DEA's role and current trends in the use of illegal narcotics and give an overview of methamphetamine labs.
The crime watch also will discuss its latest local crime statistics. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Houses coming down
LOWELLVILLE -- Two condemned houses on East Water Street are expected to be demolished before the end of this month, according to Mayor Jim Iudiciani. Two condemned houses on Youngstown-Lowellville Road will be demolished in June, the mayor added, and a commercial building downtown is expected to be condemned and demolished this summer.
Citizens Coaliton meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 7th Ward Citizens Coalition will have its May meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church on the corner of Everett and Irma avenues.
The speaker will be Ralph Ricci, chief probation officer for Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
The meeting is open to the public, and refreshments will be served afterward.
Fire district costs
LOWELLVILLE -- Members of Lowellville Council's safety committee and village administrators will discuss the costs associated with joining the Western Reserve Fire District during a special meeting at 10 a.m Saturday in the village hall.
The safety committee has been studying the issue since the possibility of joining the fire district was brought up at a council meeting April 14.
School board meeting
LOWELLVILLE -- The board of education's regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday has been rescheduled. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, in the school library/media center.
