IRVING, Texas -- About the only thing that went according to plan Sunday was Sergio Garcia tapping in for par on the 18th hole to win the Byron Nelson Championship.
Garcia squandered a two-shot lead and closed with a 1-over 71, then survived the sloppy finish by making a par on the first playoff hole as Robert Damron and Dudley Hart self-destructed.
Garcia ended a two-year winless drought on the PGA Tour and became the first player in 11 years to win the Byron Nelson despite failing to break par in the final round. He made a two-putt par on the 18th to win the playoff.
Hart, who birdied three of the final five holes to shoot 67, exited with a double bogey on the playoff hole.
Damron, who won the 2001 Byron Nelson in a four-hole playoff, lagged his 50-foot putt to within 4 feet in the playoff, but pulled the par putt to the left. It was a tough ending for Damron, who got into the playoff by holing a 7-iron from the 15th fairway for eagle and closing with a 66.
All three finished at 10-under 270.
Tiger Woods tried to make a late charge despite hitting only three fairways, and shot a 69 to finish one shot out of the playoff for the second straight week.
Duffy Waldorf (68) also finished one shot back. Also at 9-under 271 was Tim Herron, who closed with a 64. Herron did not make a birdie on the par 5s all week.
Vijay Singh made a triple bogey at No. 4, a quadruple-bogey 7 at the 17th and finished with a 78.
LPGA
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Lorena Ochoa won her first Tour event, carding a 4-under-par 68 for a one-stroke victory over Wendy Ward at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship.
Ochoa, who became the first Mexican to win an LPGA tournament, had five birdies and a bogey in the final round and held off three-time winners Ward and Pat Hurst, finishing at 16-under 272.
Ward closed with a 5-under 67 for a 273 total, while Stacy Prammanasudh (67) finished third. Hurst had a final-round 70 for a 275 total, good for fourth. Dorothy Delasin had a 68 and was fifth at 11-under.
Asian Open
SHANGHAI, China -- Miguel Angel Jimenez closed with a 5-under-par 67 for a three-stroke victory after entering the final round six shots behind leader Simon Dyson.
Jimenez finished at 14-under 274 in recording his third tour victory of the year. He had three birdies on the front nine, then pulled away with an eagle on the 13th hole.
Dyson, the leader through the first three rounds, finished with a 76 for a 277 total. Prayad Marksaeng (71) was at 278 and K.J. Choi (68) was at 279.
