MILWAUKEE -- Ben Sheets struck out a franchise-record 18, the most in the majors in three years. It was the most strikeouts since Arizona's Randy Johnson tied a major league record with 20 on May 8, 2001, against Cincinnati. Sheets (4-2) threw a three-hitter and struck out six of his last seven batters -- including all three in the ninth. Lyle Overbay hit a two-run double off Jaret Wright (2-4) and extended his hitting streak to 17 games for the Brewers, who avoided a three-game sweep. Andruw Jones homered for Atlanta.
Mets 3, Astros, 2, 13 innings
HOUSTON -- Mike Piazza spoiled Roger Clemens' bid for his eighth straight win with a tying home run in the ninth off Octavio Dotel, and New York won on Jason Phillips' 13th-inning homer. Clemens struck out 10 in seven shutout innings. Clemens allowed only two hits and singled with the bases loaded in the sixth, the fifth RBI of his career.
Marlins 3, Cardinals 2
ST. LOUIS -- Juan Pierre hit a two-run double to support Brad Penny, as Florida avoided a three-game sweep. Jim Edmonds hit his ninth homer for the Cardinals, but Penny (4-2) allowed one run and five hits in six innings. Armando Benitez got six outs for his 15th save.
Rockies 7, Phillies 6
DENVER -- Jeromy Burnitz drove in the tie-breaking run with an infield single in the eighth inning and had four RBIs, helping Colorado end a three-game losing streak. Tim Harikkala (1-0) got two outs for his first win since April 24, 1999, with Boston. Shawn Chacon worked the ninth for his 10th save.
Cubs 4, Padres 2
SAN DIEGO -- Jose Macias hit a tie-breaking home run off David Wells, and Michael Barrett also connected for Chicago. Sammy Sosa hurt himself when he sneezed twice before the game and sat out with back spasms. Wells (2-4) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings.
Reds 6, Dodgers 3
LOS ANGELES -- Adam Dunn had his first three-hit game of the season, including a two-run double, as Cincinnati completed its first three-game sweep of the year. Aaron Harang (4-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 62/3 innings, including a homer by David Ross in the fourth. Ken Griffey Jr. had a two-run single in the eighth and Danny Graves pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save.
Expos 6, Diamondbacks 1
PHOENIX -- Livan Hernandez pitched a six-hitter for his second complete game in 10 days. Hernandez (3-2) walked two and struck out seven.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 1
TORONTO -- Roy Halladay out-pitched Pedro Martinez after losing their first two matchups this season. Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays. Halladay (4-4) worked seven innings, allowing one run and six hits while striking out six. Martinez (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings.
Yankees 2, Mariners 1
NEW YORK -- Kevin Brown (5-0) held down Seattle for 72/3 innings and John Flaherty hit his first homer since August for New York. Mariano Rivera finished for his 14th save. Joel Pineiro (1-5) lost his fourth consecutive decision, pitching a five-hitter for Seattle.
Tigers 3, Rangers 1
DETROIT -- Jason Johnson pitched five innings before leaving with a blister and three Tigers relievers combined on four shutout innings. Omar Infante homered and Alex Sanchez had three hits for the Tigers, who have won three of four.
White Sox 11, Twins 0
CHICAGO -- Jose Valentin and Joe Crede homered to back Mark Buehrle as Chicago avoided a three-game sweep. Buehrle (3-1) allowed seven hits and struck out seven in 62/3 shutout innings.
Athletics 6, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Bobby Crosby had a homer among his three hits and drove in two runs, leading Oakland to its first series sweep of the season. Erubiel Durazo also homered for the A's, who have won seven of their last 10 overall and seven straight against Kansas City.
Orioles 4, Angels 0
BALTIMORE -- Sidney Ponson pitched a five-hitter to end a run of four poor starts, while Jerry Hairston drove in two runs and Javy Lopez had three hits as Baltimore snapped a three-game losing streak. Ponson (3-3) retired 19 of the final 21 batters.
