Woman honored
MINERAL RIDGE -- The congregation of The First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge named Betty Russell Garland "2004 Presbyterian Woman of the Year." The honor is given to an individual for outstanding leadership. Garland was presented with an honorary life membership in an organization, Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Garland, a registered nurse, has served the Mineral Ridge church as an elder and deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, vacation church school teacher, director of the children's Christmas play, and organized the Easter sunrise breakfast for many years. Since 1999, she has also been the parish nurse and director of health ministries.
'Men on Fire' weekend
WARREN -- The Ohio District Council Brotherhood of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc. state convention's annual "Men For Christ" weekend will be May 28 and 29 at Greater Apostolic Faith Church, 3571 Tod Ave. N.W. Priest appointed
SHARON, Pa. -- Bishop Donald W. Trautman of the Catholic Diocese of Erie has appointed the Rev. Glenn Whitman pastor of St. Joseph Parish effective July 1.
Since 1993, Father Whitman, 54, has been pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Girard. He has also been involved with the Kairos Prison Ministry.
He's served in a wide range of ministries and administrative posts at the local and national level. He has a master's degree in education from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. The Erie native was ordained May 16, 1975.
'Purpose Driven' fair
WARREN -- First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park, will have a Ministry-Mission Fair at noon May 23.
More than 25 organizations and groups will present information on their programs and will ask people to volunteer. The fair is part of the church's emphasis on "40 Days of Purpose" from Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life." The movement stresses that people are to serve God and that each person has been made for a mission.

Chorale to perform
POLAND -- The Malone College Chorale will present a concert of sacred music at 11 a.m. Sunday at Poland Village Baptist Church, 79 Hill Drive. The 60-member choir is composed of Malone students including Beau Tiger of Poland, a 2004 graduate of Malone College in Canton.
Concert at Holy Bible
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Sunbeams will perform at 5 p.m. next Saturday at Holy Bible Church of God, 54 St. Louis Ave. The theme will be "Because of Who You Are."
Feast day celebration
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Brendan Parish, 2800 Oakwood Ave., will celebrate its patronal feast day at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Commemoration will include prayers, poems, bagpipe music and tributes to the Irish monk. A social will follow the Mass.
Concert and benefit
SHARON, Pa. -- First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., will have a concert at 7 p.m. May 23 with the sanctuary choir, pianist Sarah Evans, clarinetist Becky DeLorenzo and organist Dr. Beth Harrison. Refreshments will follow. An offering will be taken to benefit the Community Food Warehouse.
Mission program
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Lydia Mission of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 110 Funston St., will have a mission program at 4 p.m. May 30. The speaker will be the Rev. Derrick Anderson of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Youngstown.
