SCHOLARSHIPS 9 awarded coaches' grants



The Mahoning Valley Coaches Association presents the $250 awards.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Nine local high school athletes have been selected to receive $250 scholarships from the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association.
Chad Baker, the son of Kirk and Lisa Baker, will graduate from Canfield High with a grade-point average of 3.88. Baker played baseball and basketball and was on the student senate. He will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall and play baseball for the Panthers.
Nick Bjelac, the son of Marc Bjelac, will graduate with a 4.0 GPA from Newton Falls. He was a three-year letterman in football and participated in baseball, track and the yearbook staff.
He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Maggie Case, a daughter of Tom and Georgia Case, will graduate from Austintown Fitch High with a 3.9 GPA. Case was an all-Ohio selection in volleyball.
She also was a member of the spirit club, the track team and the National Honor Society. She will attend Yale.
Spartan selected
Marie-Elizabeth Dohar, the daughter of Albert and Barbara Dohar, will graduate from Boardman High with a 3.87 GPA. Dohar's activities include student council, Spartan boosters, key club, YSU English festival and the bowling team.
She is a member of the National Honor Society and will attend Kent State or St. Mary's.
Joe Flood, the son of Dan and Winnie Flood, will graduate with a 3.22 GPA from Lowellville High. He participated in track for three years, basketball for four years and golf for two years.
A member of the newspaper staff, Flood will attend Youngstown State.
Howard (Christopher) Friend, is the son of Howard and Cathi Friend and will graduate from Lisbon High with a 3.86 GPA. He participated in football (four-year letterman), basketball (one letter), track (one letter), Key Club, French Club and choir.
A National Honor Society member, he will attend Ohio State.
Briana Hideg, the daughter of Jim and Margo Hideg, will graduate from Liberty High after participating in basketball and soccer. A member of the National Honor Society, she will attend Youngstown State or Toledo.
Reid Lamport, the son of Reid and Michele Lamport, will graduate with a 3.3 GPA from Poland High. He played baseball, basketball and golf.
Tyson Rowland, the son of Garry and Joyce Rowland, will graduate with a 3.89 GPA from Warren Harding High.
He won four letters in basketball and baseball, and two letters in cross country. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is listed in the Who's Who in America High School Students. He will attend Ashland.
