Relays meet goals
The Warren and Boardman Relays for Life, the two largest relay fund-raisers for the American Cancer Society in the state, met their goals this weekend.
The Warren relay, the largest in the state, took place Friday and met its goal by raising more than $510,000, said Kimberly Stillwagon, chairwoman of the public relations committee.
The Warren event included two teams that raised more than $50,000 each for cancer research. Antenucci Inc. raised more than $56,000 and Brodell Medical raised just more than $50,000, Stillwagon said. The third place team, Believers' Christian Fellowship, raised more than $19,000.
The Boardman relay, second largest in the state, also took place Friday and met its goal by raising $330,000, said Al Stabilito, communications and advocacy director for the American Cancer Society's Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana branch.
Police probe shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating a shooting on Mount Vernon Avenue early Saturday that left a 33-year-old man in guarded condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center with gunshot wounds. Reports say Nick Gray Jr., address unknown, was fighting with another man just after midnight on the front porch at 2556 Mount Vernon. A witness said the second man pulled out a handgun and fired. Both men then fled on foot in opposite directions, reports state. Police found the victim lying in the front yard of a house a few doors from the shooting site.
Blue Bridge project
YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be lane restrictions between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. starting Monday on the state Route 193 bridge over the Mahoning River, commonly called the Blue Bridge. The Ohio Department of Transportation is spending $11.9 million to replace the bridge. The project should be done by the fall of 2006.
Work on Routes 7, 164
NORTH LIMA -- There will be lane restrictions on state routes 7 and 164 between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. starting Tuesday. Drivers should expect delays. The work is part of a $1.1 million project to widen route 164 for the addition of left-turn lanes at Routes 7 and 164. The project, to be done by summer, also includes the addition of a right-turn lane on the north leg of the intersection and a new traffic signal.
Charged in robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown youths, ages 15 and 16, were charged in connection with an aggravated robbery outside Ally's Food Store on South Avenue on Friday evening. A Youngstown woman told police the youths robbed her and another unidentified person of $1. Police later arrested two suspects in the 300 block of East Avondale Avenue. The youths were taken to Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, the 16-year-old charged with aggravated robbery and 15-year-old charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
GED practice test
BOARDMAN -- Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will administer the GED practice test from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Southern Park Mall. The practice test is free on a walk-in basis at the Educational Resource Center near Sears. Passing the test allows takers to receive a fee waiver for the official GED test. Participants must be at least 18, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or identification card. For more information, call (330) 729-4100.
Committee to meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Weapons of Mass Destruction Planning Committee will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the South Side Annex on Market Street to approve expenditures from its $932,382 grant. The money will be used to buy gas detection units, incident command sets, defibrillators, protective suits, fitted masks for responders, and medical supplies to be used in a case of mass casualties.
Boil-water advisory
COLUMBIANA -- A boil-water advisory was issued for residents of Fairfield Avenue south of Metz Road, including the Cimmaron development, Columbiana police said. The advisory likely will remain in effect until Tuesday. The reason for the advisory wasn't clear Saturday evening.
