HONORS
Distinguished alumni
Judge Jack Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will receive the University of Dayton School of Law's Distinguished Alumni Award at a ceremony Friday.
Judge Durkin is receiving the honor for his work involving Ohio's drug court program.
Started in 1995, the program supervises criminal defendants willing to work toward drug abstinence while also following traditional court orders, such as restitution and community service. The idea behind drug court is to put people convicted of drug-related crimes into treatment and rehabilitation programs instead of sending them to prison. Judge Durkin started the drug court program in Mahoning County in 1997.
Judge Durkin is a 1976 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, and he received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Dayton. He has been a lawyer since 1983 and a common pleas court judge since 1997.
