GROVE CITY COLLEGE Two college seniors are named Man , Woman of the Year



The top student honors were presented during Parents' Weekend.
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Two northwestern Pennsylvania students have been named the 2004 Senior Man and Woman of the Year at Grove City College.
J. Ashton Carr II, of North East, Pa., and Margaret Whitbeck, known as Peggy, of Saegertown, were presented with the honor during the recent Parents' Weekend Recognition Convocation.
The awards for Senior Man of the Year and the Senior Woman of the Year are presented jointly by the leadership honoraries Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa as a service to Grove City College.
Selections are made on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service, and the candidates were voted on by the students and faculty.
Carr was active in Student Government Association for his entire college career, serving as freshman and sophomore class president, executive president of academic affairs and, eventually, executive president. He was on Homecoming Committee and founded and led the Crimson & amp; White Society.
Carr ran track and cross country his freshman and sophomore years and is a two-year letter-winner and a scholar-athlete at Grove City and in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Tapped for ODK, Mortar Board, Delta Mu Delta and Who's Who, he is a son of James and Rita Carr. The business management major plans to attend law school.
Senior Woman of Year
Whitbeck is a swimmer and, this season, repeated as conference MVP and earned her third consecutive national championship in the 200 butterfly stroke category at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, making her the only Grove City swimmer to win a national title.
An eight-time All-American, she is also the national Division III record-holder in the 200 butterfly. She was also involved in the New Grace Singers, Chapel Choir and the Adopt-a-Grandparent program and was also named to the Scroll and Key honorary. She is a music education major, the daughter of Donald and Eva Whitbeck, and plans to be married May 29.
