SOFTBALL W. Reserve, Mineral Ridge move to district semifinals



Springfield, Poland and Hubbard clinched a share of their league titles.
BERLIN CENTER -- Junior Katie Harmon pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk Thursday as the Western Reserve High softball team blanked Youngstown Christian 20-0 in the Division IV tournament.
Harmon (9-4) added a double, a single and two RBIs for the top-seeded Blue Devils (15-6), who will play in the Cortland district next Thursday.
Lindsay Kuebler had three hits with a double and six RBIs while Andrea Martin had three hits.
Stevie Banks hit a triple and Racheal Hernan doubled for Western Reserve.
Mineral Ridge 15, Mathews 2
VIENNA -- Mineral Ridge broke the game open with eight runs in the fifth inning to post a victory over Mathews in the Div. IV tournament.
Chelsea Fridley led the Rams with three hits and two RBIs, while Robin Zimmerman added two hits and two RBIs, Emily Sheller two hits and Sarah Stark two RBIs.
Katie Olive also provided a spark with a home run, double and three RBIs while pitcher Kaili Gehring (15-3) had eight strikeouts and one walk.
The Rams (17-5) will play East Canton next Thursday at Lakeview High. East Canton defeated Sebring 15-1.
Mathews is 8-13.
Regular season
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Krista Snyder pitched a two-hit shutout as Springfield beat McDonald 8-0 to clinch a share of the Inter-County League title with Mineral Ridge.
Snyder (9-4) had seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter for the Tigers (18-6). She also had two hits. Amanda Delvaux had three hits, while Colleen Platt and Ashley Fagnano each had two hits.
Canton GlenOak 3, Boardman 1
CANTON -- GlenOak pitcher Jodie Cole held Boardman to one run on five hits and the Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull into a tie for first with the Spartans in the Federal League.
Cole (14-3) struck out four and walked one for GlenOak (17-3, 8-2). Jen Axe added two hits.
Sarah Albani had an RBI single for the Spartans (20-3, 8-2).
Poland 7, Salem 0
SALEM -- Mallory Conger tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Bulldogs (19-5, 10-1) to a share of the Metro Athletic Conference championship. Poland has won or shared a title every year since 1987.
Krista Ginnetti and Steffi Graf each had three hits for Poland, with Ginnetti hitting a home run. Conger struck out eight and walked one.
Salem's only hit came on Stephanie Szabat's bunt single in the fourth inning.
Mooney 10, Warren JFK 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mooney set a school record with 18 wins in a season in the completion of a Steel Valley Conference game postponed April 12 after one inning with the Cardinals leading, 7-0.
Stefanie Grimaldi, who pitched the first inning, was credited with the win, while Colleen Courtney, who pitched the next six innings, got the save. They combined on a five-hitter.
Eight Mooney players each got one single while 10 players each scored one run to key the offense.
Mooney (18-8, 3-3 Steel Valley Conference) previously won 17 games in the 1999 and the 2003 seasons.
Hubbard 11, LaBrae 3
LEAVITTSBURG -- Amanda Taylor (16-3) earned the win and had three hits, one a double for the Eagles (16-4, 12-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Kelly Hudy had three hits, one a triple, for Hubbard, which tied Champion for first in the TAC.
Kim Colderwood doubled for LaBrae.
McDonald 5, Lowellville 0
LOWELLVILLE -- In a game played Wednesday, the Blue Devils recorded their first victory of the season on a three-hit shutout by freshman Lauren Walls. She struck out two and walked two.
Walls also hit two doubles and drove in two runs for McDonald (1-13). Carla Blinsky had 11 strikeouts and one walk for Lowellville.
