MOSQUITO LAKE Petition seeks sewer construction
Sewer plans for the area are still being evaluated.
BAZETTA -- About one-third of the families in the Lakeshore Allotments have signed a petition requesting the construction of sewers in the neighborhood on the west side of Mosquito Lake. The petitions were circulated by Trumbull County Board of Health officials at a community meeting Wednesday.
For more than a decade, officials and residents have been aware that untreated waste from septic systems in the area has been draining into the lake, which is also Warren's water supply. The problem has put the area high on the EPA's list of trouble spots in Trumbull County.
"No one is happy when they have to spend money," said township trustee Michael Piros.
But he said many residents said they'd rather pay an assessment for sewer service than face the possibility of expensive septic system upgrades.
Stopgap measures
The health department also told residents they will be required to install new devices on their septic systems or agree to have their systems pumped as a stopgap measure before sewers can be installed.
A dozen residents filled out paperwork agreeing to the stopgap measures, said Director of Environmental Health Frank Migliozzi.
The stopgap measures would probably cost homeowners less than $1,000, he said.
County Sanitary Engineer Gary Newbrough is in the process of evaluating options for extending sewer service to the area. Possibilities include upgrading a small septic plant nearby, or building an interceptor line to tie the area in with the larger county system.
Just putting sewer lines in the ground to each of 59 homes in the area would cost about $540,000, he said.
