BASEBALL W. Branch loses in perfect game
Salem and Niles advanced to Division II district contests.
CANTON -- Zach Winkhart threw a perfect game, striking out seven, to lead Canton Central Catholic to a 9-0 victory over visiting West Branch in a Division II sectional baseball final on Thursday.
Alex Schmid had three hits and scored twice for the third-seeded Crusaders (19-5), while D.J. Lung and Brad Competty each had two hits.
West Branch is 12-12.
Salem 6, Marlington 4
SALEM -- The Quakers (16-7) scored three runs in the 10th inning to advance to a district semifinal against Canton Central Catholic next Thursday at Don Scott Field in Canton.
Landon Heath homered and Jarin Heath doubled for Salem, which used seven pitchers. Jarin Heath got the win and Landon Heath the save.
Niles 4, Lakeview 1
STRUTHERS -- Niles (12-6), behind 1-0, scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Red Dragons' Jeff Claar scattered five hits, with four strikeouts, as he pitched a complete game to pick up the win.
Matt McGuire hit a pair of singles to pace Niles.
Sean McBride hit a double and two singles to spark the Bulldogs.
Regular season
NORTH LIMA -- South Range (16-8, 10-1) completed a doubleheader sweep of Mineral Ridge (7-14, 5-7) to secure its fourth straight Inter-County League title.
The Raiders defeated Mineral Ridge 5-4 in eight innings in the completion of a suspended game, before capturing the title with a 13-2 victory.
Derek Baker's single scored Justin Forgac with the winning run in the first game. Drew Hazel got the win by pitching 52/3 innings of solid relief.
Brad Ward had two hits for Mineral Ridge.
In the second game, the Raiders scored seven runs in the third inning to break it open.
Tom Dechellis, Ben Detwiler and Greg Rohan each had two hits in the game. Rohan homered and drove in four runs. Dan Justice got the win.
Chris Ault had two hits for Mineral Ridge.
Warren JFK 4, Mooney 3
WARREN -- Warren JFK pitcher Mike Ellis struck out 11 and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Eagles past Mooney in a Steel Valley Conference game.
Ellis (2-4) also drove in a run in the fifth for the Eagles (11-13, 2-4). Ryan Keller had two hits, including a double and Marc Rossi had two RBIs.
Jim Berry doubled for Mooney (14-11, 2-4).
GlenOak 7, Fitch 4
CANTON -- Pitcher Ben Gerstenslager put down an Austintown Fitch rally in the last inning to lead Canton GlenOak to victory in a Federal League game.
Gerstenslager pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks, while Ryan Baechel had a double, single and one RBI and David Ashman two singles and one RBI to also lead GlenOak (9-14, 6-5 FL).
Dom Modarelli and Mike Eliseo both had RBI singles for Fitch (17-6, 7-5 FL) in the last inning to key a three-run rally. But Gerstenslager stemmed the tide with the bases loaded and two outs.
Ursuline 6, Springfield 5
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Ursuline's Ryan Satterlee drove in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.
Maplewood 11, Badger 1
MECCA -- Matt Chronister pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks, while Jake Abbott slugged a two-run homer, double and two singles to lead Maplewood (17-5). Chronister is 6-0.
Doug Wajda had two hits and as many RBIs, while Brayton Bollinger and Brian Hivick each had two RBIs to bolster Maplewood.
Badger is 10-10.
